Charlie Cox has been playing Matt Murdock for over a decade, and for the first time, his Daredevil costume finally features the classic double-D logo fans have been waiting to see.
The actor, who returns as the Man Without Fear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, recently opened up about his excitement for the new suit. After years of wearing variations of the red and black costumes without the signature chest emblem, Cox says this new look is special—and he feels he finally earned it.
A 10 Year Wait for the Double D Logo
For fans who have followed Cox’s journey since the Netflix series premiered in 2015, the new suit brings a long-awaited comic book detail to life. The DD logo, a staple of Daredevil’s comic book appearance for decades, makes its official live-action debut on the chest of the character in Season 2.
Speaking at New York Comic Con in October 2025, Cox shared his excitement about finally wearing the emblem. “There’s a cool new suit, which I’m really excited about. It’s my favorite one yet,” he told the audience. “It’s got the double Ds on the chest, which I’ve been waiting for for about 10 years. I started to think I was never going to earn those.”
The moment is significant not just for the actor but for the character’s journey. Costume designer Emily Gunshor previously explained why the logo was absent from earlier versions of the suit, noting that it was “a specific story point” to hold it back until the right moment in the narrative. Now, with Matt Murdock facing his biggest challenges yet, the arrival of the DD emblem signals a new chapter for the hero.
How the Black Paint Tells a Story
The new suit isn’t just about adding a logo. The design tells a story through its very appearance. The costume starts out painted black over the familiar red suit, but as the season progresses, the black paint begins to chip away during action sequences, revealing the red underneath.
Cox explained the creative reasoning behind this choice. “So he’s painted his suit, his red suit black. But over the course of the season, the more action takes place, the black starts to strip away and the red comes through underneath,” he said.
This visual change reflects what Matt Murdock is going through emotionally. The black represents a darker phase for the character, while the return of the red signals him finding his way back to who he truly is. It is a creative approach that makes the costume an active part of the storytelling rather than just a wardrobe change.

What It Is Really Like to Wear the Suit
While the new suit looks great on screen, wearing it for long shooting days comes with real challenges. Cox recently spoke about the less glamorous side of suiting up as Daredevil.
He noted that the suit provides a sense of protection during action scenes, which helps when actors have to make slight contact during fight sequences. “If I’ve got the suit on, I feel completely protected,” he said.
But the comfort stops there. Cox admitted the costume gets extremely hot very quickly. “You sweat after take one, and then you’re wet all day. You’re just sitting in sweat all day,” he revealed. The suit also limits movement, making action scenes physically demanding despite the protective benefits.
The Shadowland Inspiration
The new black and red color scheme draws clear inspiration from the Shadowland comic book storyline, a divisive arc where Matt Murdock takes control of The Hand and becomes a more ruthless version of himself.
Leaked set photos from March 2025 first showed Cox’s stunt double wearing the black costume with the DD logo, sparking fan discussions about whether the show would adapt Shadowland’s darker themes. Cox himself addressed the thematic meaning behind the darker look.
“Thematically, I think it represents a much darker side to the character,” Cox explained. “But darker in the sense that he’s unable to present himself to the world in the way that he has in the past. He’s unable to be a symbol. Well, he is able to be a symbol, but he needs to go back to his roots of hiding in the shadows.”
This shift in approach makes sense given the situation Matt finds himself in during Season 2. Mayor Wilson Fisk has implemented martial law in New York City, and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force is actively hunting Daredevil. Matt and Karen Page are forced to stay in a safe house most of the day, only coming out at night to survive.
