The storyline he is eyeing is famously one of the most dangerous and mentally heavy chapters in the hero’s history. The Prison Storyline That Could Change Everything
Charlie Cox recently shared his excitement about a specific comic arc titled “Devil in Cell Block D.” This story ran in Daredevil (Vol.2) #86 and puts the hero in a position he rarely finds himself in: completely trapped. In this story, Matt Murdock gets moved out of protective custody at Rikers Island and thrown into the general prison population. For a lawyer who has sent countless criminals to jail, this is a death sentence.
Cox described this as one of his favorite moments from the comics. He explained that the situation is “very chilling” because Matt cannot use his usual tricks to escape. The actor noted that being moved into Gen-Pop is “disastrous for someone like Matt Murdock because he’s put so many of these people away. His life is gonna be in real danger.” This storyline strips away Matt’s lawyer badge and his Daredevil suit, leaving just the vulnerable man underneath.
A Terrifying Smile Hints at Matt Murdock’s Dark Side
What makes this comic arc so unsettling is not just the violence, but Matt’s reaction to it. Charlie Cox recalled a specific scene where a judge decides to send Matt back to the general population. Watching from the side, reporter Ben Urich notices a “chilling” detail. Matt has a small smile on his face.
Cox elaborated on this psychological twist, stating that there is a moment where Urich sees a “slight hint of a smile on his face, almost as if he wants it.” This detail is important because it changes the whole meaning of the story. He recalled shooting in a “dark, dingy, cold” basement in Soho. D’Onofrio wears a heavy body suit under his costume, making the physical work very difficult. Cox added that the scene recreates a specific piece of art by comic artist Alex Maleev, which he personally asked the crew to include.

The “Born Again” comic from 1986, written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzucchelli, is considered one of the greatest superhero stories ever told.
