Cierra Ortega has publicly addressed the controversy that led to her sudden removal from Love Island USA, apologizing for past social media posts containing a racial slur against the Asian community. The 25-year-old reality star shared a lengthy statement on Instagram, expressing regret and explaining her side of the story while condemning the harassment her family has faced.

Cierra Ortegaโ€™s Apology and Explanation

Three days after her exit from Love Island USA, Cierra Ortega posted a heartfelt message on Instagram. She admitted to using an offensive term in old social media posts but claimed she was unaware of its harmful meaning at the time.

โ€œWhile I was in the villa, there were some posts that resurfaced from my past where I was very naively using an incredibly offensive and derogatory term. And before I get into the details, I want to first start by addressing not just anyone that I have hurt or deeply offended, but most importantly, the entire Asian community. I am deeply, truly, honestly so sorry. I had no idea that the word held as much pain, as much harm, and came with the history that it did, or I never would have used it.โ€

Ortega explained that she only learned the term was a slur in 2024 when a follower messaged her about it. She said she immediately deleted the post and educated herself on its history.

โ€œI do want to hold my hands up and say that I take accountability for using the word, but I do want it to be known that I genuinely had no idea that it was a slur. I had no idea of its meaning, and it wasnโ€™t until I made the public story post in 2024 when a follower of mine reached out to correct me and let me know that what I was saying was incredibly hurtful.โ€

Backlash and Threats Against Ortegaโ€™s Family

The backlash against Ortega escalated quickly after her past posts resurfaced. She revealed that her family has been targeted with threats and even had U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) called on them.

โ€œThey have had ICE called on them and they no longer feel safe in their own home. Iโ€™m receiving death threats, like thereโ€™s no need to fight hate with hate. I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s justice. And if you want to know that you are heard and that Iโ€™m sorry and that I will move differently, I promise you, thatโ€™s what will happen.โ€

Her parents also released a statement on her Instagram, condemning the online harassment while acknowledging the need for accountability.

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen the posts, the headlines, the hurt and the hate. And while Cierra hasnโ€™t seen any of it yet, we have. And so have the people who love her. Weโ€™re not here to justify or ignore whatโ€™s surfaced. We understand why people are upset, and we know accountability matters. But whatโ€™s happening online right now has gone far beyond that. The threats. The cruel messages. The attacks on her family, her friends, even her supporters, itโ€™s heartbreaking. Itโ€™s uncalled for. And no one deserves that kind of hate, no matter what mistake theyโ€™ve made.โ€

Love Island USAโ€™s Handling of the Controversy

Ortegaโ€™s exit from Love Island USA was announced during the July 6 episode, with the showโ€™s narrator stating she left due to a โ€œpersonal situation.โ€ However, fans quickly linked her departure to the resurfaced posts.

This marks the second time this season a contestant has been removed over past racist remarks. Earlier, Yulissa Escobar was quietly taken off the show after old podcast clips surfaced where she used a racial slur.

Former contestant Belle-A Walker, who is of Filipino descent, reacted to Ortegaโ€™s posts, expressing disappointment while urging fans not to respond with more hate.

โ€œWhen I first saw what my fellow Islander said on their social media pages, I was incredibly heartbroken. But I wanted to wait until they left the villa and were able to address the situation, genuinely apologize, and commit to learning from the experience before deciding how our relationship would look moving forward.โ€

Social Media Fallout and Public Reaction

Ortegaโ€™s Instagram following dropped significantly after the controversy, losing over 120,000 followers. Some fans supported her apology, while others felt her explanation was insufficient.

One fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

โ€œCierraโ€™s apology seems sincere, but ignorance isnโ€™t an excuse. She shouldโ€™ve known better, especially in 2024.โ€

Another commented:

โ€œCalling ICE on her family is taking things way too far. Hate doesnโ€™t solve hate.โ€

Ortegaโ€™s friends also distanced themselves. Influencer MJ Hedderman, who managed Ortegaโ€™s social media during the show, stepped back, stating:

โ€œI want to be clear that I do not condone racism, bigotry, or hate in any way shape or form, nor was I aware of the recent screenshots until they were posted.โ€

Whatโ€™s Next for Cierra Ortega?

Ortega has not announced any future plans but emphasized her commitment to learning from the situation. She ended her statement by promising to do better.

โ€œIf you want to know that you are heard and that Iโ€™m sorry and that I will move differently, I promise you, thatโ€™s what will happen.โ€
