James Gunn’s monster-filled series Creature Commandos is coming back for a second season. A new rumor suggests its story will get a major power boost with the addition of one of DC’s most powerful heroes, Captain Atom. While the show’s creators have not confirmed this news, reports from industry sources say this classic character will make his first appearance in the new DC Universe through the animated series.
Following the finale of Season 1 in early January 2025, the adult animated show was officially renewed for another season on Max. The series, which follows a team of monstrous inmates on dangerous black ops missions, was the first official release in Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe plan.
What the Captain Atom Rumor Says
According to a report from Nexus Point News, Captain Atom is set to appear as a recurring character in Creature Commandos Season 2. The report states the show will use the Nathaniel Adam version of the hero. In DC comics, this version is an Air Force pilot and Vietnam War veteran. A science experiment gives him incredible powers but also sends him decades into the future. His body is coated in a silver metal, and his abilities are tied to nuclear energy, including flight, super strength, and energy absorption.
It is not yet known who will provide the voice for Captain Atom. His specific role in the story of the monster team is also unclear. This potential introduction is significant because Captain Atom has never appeared in a live-action movie or show. James Gunn has previously explained that a key part of the new DC Universe will be having actors play their characters across both animation and live-action. This means the actor cast to voice Captain Atom here could later play him in a movie.
Captain Atom’s Power and History
For those unfamiliar with the character, Captain Atom is often listed among DC Comics’ most powerful heroes, with abilities that rival or even exceed those of Superman. He is essentially a sentient quantum energy field, which allows him to manipulate matter and energy at a fundamental level. Beyond super strength and flight, he can generate massive energy blasts and has a high degree of invulnerability.
The character has a long history, originally created for Charlton Comics in the 1960s before the company and its characters were bought by DC. The Nathaniel Adam version debuted in 1987. He is a well-known figure in DC animation, having played important roles in series like Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice. His reported arrival in the DCU through Creature Commandos would be his first step into this new connected franchise.
What We Know About Season 2’s Story and Team
The first season of Creature Commandos ended with some big changes for the team. After the mission in Pokolistan, The Bride (voiced by Indira Varma) was put in charge of a new squad. The final episode showed this new team would include returning members like Doctor Phosphorus and Weasel, alongside new monsters such as King Shark, Nosferata, and Khalis. King Shark is a fan-favorite who was previously seen in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
The core voice cast is expected to return, including Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is also set to appear in the upcoming Superman movie and the second season of Peacemaker, showing how these characters will move between shows and films.
“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them,” said Amy Gravitt, an executive at HBO & Max, when the show was renewed.
While Season 2’s specific mission is a secret, the writers have started their work. Showrunner Dean Lorey mentioned in early 2025 that the season was being “fast-tracked” by DC.

When Can We Expect Season 2?
An official release date for Creature Commandos Season 2 has not been announced. The first season was announced in January 2023 and premiered in December 2024. Given that animation takes considerable time, some estimates suggest fans might have to wait until 2027 for the new season. However, with the writing process already underway and the project reportedly on a fast track, updates could come sooner.
All episodes of Creature Commandos Season 1 are available to stream on Max. The series is a key part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which will include future projects like Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and The Authority.
