The latest episode of AMC’s crime drama brought a terrifying turn for Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn when his obsession with catching a killer gave the enemy exactly what she needed to strike where it hurts the most.

Season 4 Episode 6 of “Dark Winds,” titled “Shíká Nidanitáhą́ą́ (Those Who Were Searching for Me),” aired on March 22, 2026, and delivered one of the most intense hours of the series so far. The episode saw Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) setting up a trap to catch the German assassin Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente), but the plan backfired completely when Vaggan avoided the ambush and went after Leaphorn’s wife, Emma (Deanna Allison).

The Trap That Went Wrong

After discovering a bug in his motel room earlier in the episode, Leaphorn realized Vaggan had been tracking his every move. With help from FBI Agent Shaw (Luke Barnett), he put together a plan to use Sonny Bear Heart (Chaske Spencer), the Los Angeles gangster holding Jim Chee captive, as bait to lure Vaggan into a trap.

The setup seemed promising. Sonny called Vaggan and told her he had a job for her. She initially showed no interest, but when Sonny mentioned he had caught a Navajo cop named Joseph Leaphorn snooping around, her attitude changed instantly. “I’ll be there in an hour,” she said.

The FBI set up surveillance at the meeting spot, but Vaggan proved to be too clever. She showed up on a rooftop with a rifle instead of meeting at the green van as expected. When she spotted the FBI agents on another rooftop, everything fell apart. Leaphorn shouted “Down!” but Sonny did not react fast enough and took a bullet to the neck, dying on the spot.

Leaphorn ran through traffic to reach the building where Vaggan had positioned herself, but when he got to the roof, she was already gone.

Emma’s Frightening Confrontation with Vaggan

The most chilling moment came after the failed ambush. Emma, who works at the Indian Health Services clinic in Los Angeles, was leaving for the day when she walked toward her truck in the parking garage. Vaggan appeared behind her and asked, “What does he see in you?”

Emma did not freeze. She reacted quickly, hitting Vaggan in the face with her keys. Bloodied, Vaggan responded with a terrifying threat: “You abandoned him, you deserve to die.”

Deanna Allison, who plays Emma, explained the significance of this moment to TV Insider. “I think it comes down to where sometimes work can come too close to home,” Allison said. “Sometimes work can be too close to home, and that’s why sometimes for Navajo people to have a profession in law enforcement or even as a nurse to deal with dead bodies… those kinds of things [can start] following you back home.”

Allison added that Emma immediately sensed the danger from Vaggan. “When she faces [Vaggan], she feels like, ‘Oh, this woman does not mean good energy.’ I think that’s the time she realizes this particular case is getting too close to home, and there’s something also that this woman has attached to Leaphorn.”

Leaphorn found Emma crying in her truck moments later, embracing her as Vaggan disappeared into the city.

Chee’s Ghost Sickness Takes a Dark Turn

While Leaphorn dealt with the ambush, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) remained at the clinic recovering from his injuries. His ghost sickness continued to worsen, and he experienced disturbing visions throughout the episode. In one dream, he walked out of the clinic and saw a wool blanket in the middle of the street. When he pulled it back, he saw a woman coughing up blood.

The vision became so real that Chee actually walked into the street. Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) pulled him away just before a car could hit him.

Emma later told Chee that she knew about his ghost sickness. She also knew that he was present when his mother died years ago. The trauma from that event had resurfaced, and Emma explained that Chee would need to seek help from a medicine person on the reservation to get better.

Emma’s Wisdom Helps Bernadette and Chee

Despite the growing threat from Vaggan, Emma provided important guidance to Bernadette and Chee during the episode. Bernadette confided in Emma about her worries regarding her career and her relationship with Chee. She was concerned that she might not be able to fill Leaphorn’s shoes when he retires, and she was also unsure about her future with Chee.

Emma shared a personal story about how she had once wanted to become a doctor, but it was nearly impossible for women in her time. She told Bernadette she regretted not following her dream. “Don’t let other people decide what you deserve,” Emma said.

Kiowa Gordon spoke about how important Emma’s presence was for Chee and Bernadette. “It’s so great to have that interaction out in LA,” Gordon said. “For Emma to be there, because if she wasn’t, she’d be back in the Res and we wouldn’t have those moments where she clears the air for us.”

What Emma’s Attack Means for Leaphorn

The episode ended with Vaggan calling Leaphorn from a payphone near her abandoned green van. She told him she was trying to “keep the balance” and honor his customs. Leaphorn responded that she was getting sloppy, but Vaggan seemed unfazed. She told him she hoped he would find her.

Now that Vaggan has directly threatened Emma, the stakes for Leaphorn have never been higher. His personal and professional lives have collided in the worst possible way. Emma, who had separated from Leaphorn earlier in the season and moved to Los Angeles, now finds herself in the crosshairs of a trained killer who has developed an unhealthy obsession with her husband.

The episode made it clear that Vaggan is not just a hired assassin. She has become personally invested in Leaphorn, which makes her more dangerous than ever.
