Despite controversy surrounding actor Yoo Ah In, director Kim Hyung Ju confirmed that he will appear in the film “The Match.” The movie will be released in theaters on March 26, 2025.
Director’s Decision
Kim Hyung Ju explained that while promotional materials removed Yoo Ah In’s image, it was impossible to remove him from the film itself. He said that the relationship between the two main characters is essential to the story.
“Since it’s a story about two people, there were structural issues.”
The director expressed hope that viewers will focus on the movie’s artistic value.
“From a directorโs perspective, the film was already wounded before it was released, and I didnโt want to make additional wounds.”
Yoo Ah In’s Controversy
Yoo Ah In, whose real name is Uhm Hong Sik, faced legal trouble after being convicted of illegal drug use. He was found guilty of regularly using propofol. Initially, prosecutors asked for a four-year sentence. However, the Seoul Central District Court gave him a one-year sentence, which was later suspended. His legal issues caused delays for “The Match.”
About The Match
“The Match” tells the story of the mentor-disciple relationship and rivalry between Go legends Cho Hun Hyun and Lee Chang Ho. Lee Byung Hun plays Cho Hun Hyun, the first Korean champion of the Ing Cup in 1988. He mentors young prodigy Lee Chang Ho in 1984. As the story progresses, Lee Chang Ho’s skills surpass his mentor’s, leading Cho Hun Hyun to try and regain his former glory.
The film was initially planned for a Netflix release. However, it will now be shown in theaters, a decision supported by distributor BY4M Studio. Kim Hyung Ju was happy about this, stating,
“We originally geared up for a theatrical release. I believe theaters are what make a movie a movie, so I was glad to meet the audience in this venue.”
The director also mentioned the challenges of portraying the players’ psychology during the quiet game.
โBeyond technique, it was also challenging to convey the psychology of the players in the stillness of the game,โ
