ZE:A, also known as Children of Empire, is a South Korean boy band formed by Star Empire Entertainment in 2010. The group comprises nine members, including prominent K-drama actors Park Hyung Sik and Im Siwan. Here’s an in-depth look at the group’s history, current status, and its members.
Formation and Early Years of ZE:A
ZE:A made its debut on January 7, 2010, with the single album Nativity. Their lead single, “Mazeltov,” gained immediate attention. The group’s official debut performance took place on January 15, 2010, on KBS’ Music Bank.
Initially known as Children of Empire, ZE:A quickly became known for their appearances on various guerilla shows and user-created content (UCC) videos. They were featured in the documentary-style show Star Empire and later had their own series, Empire Kids Returns. The group faced a minor controversy in December 2010 over their name’s similarity to that of Brown Eyed Girls’ JeA, leading them to adjust the pronunciation of their name.
Updates from 2012
In 2012, ZE:A faced a brief hiatus. During this period, members explored opportunities in drama and variety shows. Im Siwan gained significant fame for his role as the teenage Heo Yeom in the MBC historical drama The Moon That Embraces the Sun.
The group’s comeback album was initially set for June 21, 2012, but was postponed due to an injury to member Jun Young. During this time, Ha Min Woo formed a unit group, 3Peace Lovers, with Japanese artists Hayato Nikaido and Yoshihide Sasaki. Their debut single, “Virtual Love,” was released on June 26, 2012.
Current Status of ZE:A
The group continued to release music and saw some members enlist in the military. In February 2017, there were rumors about the group’s disbandment, which were quickly debunked. The members confirmed that while they would focus on individual activities and join different companies, ZE:A would not disband. On April 12, 2017, Star Empire Entertainment stated that ZE:A would regroup and make a comeback when the time was right.
