Director Kim Hyung Joo, the person who directed the movie ‘The Match‘, recently talked about his experience working with the main actor, Yoo Ah In.
In a conversation with Ilgan Sports, Kim Hyung Joo shared his thoughts on Yoo Ah In after the movie. ‘The Match‘ tells the story of the big rivalry between Go masters Cho Hun Hyun and his student, Lee Chang Ho. Director Kim mentioned that he doesn’t usually keep in close touch with people and hasn’t contacted Yoo Ah In since the news about the drug issue. He said the only time he saw Yoo Ah In was at his father’s funeral last year.
He told me, โIโve committed an unforgivable sin.โ Given the circumstances, we couldnโt have a long conversation.
The movie ‘The Match‘ was originally planned to be released on Netflix in 2023. However, this didn’t happen because Yoo Ah In got involved in a legal investigation about using propofol. Because of this, the movie was instead released in theaters on March 26.
Looking back at the journey of the film, Kim Hyung Joo expressed mixed feelings.
I have mixed emotions. It was a difficult period, but it has passed. Since we had initially worked on this as a Netflix film, adjusting it for theaters gave me a fresh perspective on the actors’ performances and the finer details. Iโm satisfied with the final result.
Even though the movie is about the game Go, Kim Hyung Joo pointed out that “the heart of the story lies in the drama between the two main characters.” To make the movie easy for everyone to understand, he carefully studied Go magazines from the 1970s. He also used filming techniques like very close-up shots and a style similar to sports broadcasts.
About choosing the actors, director Kim said, “I cast Lee Byung Hun first. Yoo Ah Inโs appearance and acting style were quite different from Lee Byung Hunโs, but he held his own against Lee Byung Hunโs powerful presence.”
He also praised Yoo Ah In‘s acting in the movie.
He brought the character to life exceptionally well. Despite everything that happened, I donโt want to let the controversy overshadow his acting. As for Lee Byung Hun, while he initially didnโt resemble Cho Hun Hyun much, once filming began, he embodied the role perfectly.
Thinking about the difficulties before the movie’s release, Kim Hyung Joo admitted, “There was nothing I could do but drink. It took time to accept the situation.” However, he now feels more at peace.
Yoo Ah In made mistakes, and he should face the consequences. I hope he rehabilitates for his own sake.
