The first season of Apple TV’s thriller series Down Cemetery Road ended with its eighth episode, titled What Will Survive, on December 10, 2025. The finale delivered intense action and long-awaited answers, concluding the dangerous journey of private investigator Zoe Boehm and art restorer Sarah Trafford. After a government conspiracy put a target on their backs for trying to protect a young girl, the final episode revealed who lived, who died, and who walked away unscathed.
What Happened to Amos?
The season’s primary antagonist, the ruthless operative Amos, met his end in the finale. His death came during a violent confrontation inside a church where he had cornered Zoe.
After a grenade thrown by Amos caused chaos, Zoe, Sarah, and the girl they were protecting, Dinah, tried to escape through a channel under the church floor. Amos grabbed Zoe’s ankle, pulling her back. He overpowered her and began to choke her. However, Zoe had a hidden advantage. Earlier, Dinah had pulled a large, rusty nail from a church pew and given it to Zoe for protection.
“She uses it to jab Amos in the eye. The stab wound would have blinded him, but it wouldn’t have killed him. However, Amos ends up stumbling after the stabbing and hits his head on the church stairs, killing him instantly.”
Zoe confirmed his death by simply stating, “Fucker’s dead,” as she walked out of the burning church. This ended the threat from the man who had killed Sarah’s friend Downey and framed Zoe for murder.
Sarah’s Escape and a Symbolic New Beginning
While Zoe fought Amos inside, Sarah faced her own battle outside the church with another government agent, Hamza. He had kidnapped them but hesitated to follow orders to kill Sarah and Dinah. Sarah managed to get the upper hand, pointing a gun at Hamza. He tried to talk his way out, even throwing his own gun down. When Sarah cautiously lowered her weapon, Hamza grabbed it and tried to shoot her.
The plan backfired. Hamza did not realize the shotgun still had its safety plugs in. The gun exploded in his hand, severely injuring him and blowing off three of his fingers. Sarah did not finish him off. The final scenes showed Hamza, alive but wounded, stumbling alone on a remote road.
Sarah’s escape was more than just physical. A powerful moment in the finale showed her finally letting go of her old life. While driving away in a stolen car with Zoe and Dinah, Sarah took off her wedding ring and threw it out the window. Actor Ruth Wilson, who plays Sarah, explained this act represents her character’s freedom.
“I think throwing off the ring is like, ‘OK, I’m ready to see what else is out there for me… I’ve got a new beginning.’”
She realized her marriage was based on dishonesty and that she had no fulfilling life to return to after her ordeal.
C’s Shocking Move and the Government Cover-Up
While Amos faced violent justice, the government official known as C, who orchestrated the entire conspiracy, faced no real consequences. His illegal operation involved testing a chemical weapon and a failed antidote on British soldiers, including Dinah’s father.
In the finale, political aide Talia confronted C with evidence of the plot. Instead of being arrested, C calmly resigned from his government post. In a telling final scene, he walked to a waiting car, where a mysterious businessman greeted him.
“The man presents him papers and C signs, and the mysterious man says, ‘Welcome to the private sector.’”
C seamlessly transitioned from a corrupt government official to a private sector operative, escaping all accountability for the deaths he caused. Talia, now the new Defence Secretary, was left to manage the public scandal alone, giving a tense television interview about the incident.

The Final Goodbyes and an Uncertain Future
The series ended with the core mystery resolved and Dinah safe. Sarah and Zoe delivered Dinah to her aunt, Ella, who was the sister of Dinah’s father, Downey. In a crowded train station, the two women who survived the conspiracy together then parted ways with a simple wave.
The actors have shared their thoughts on their characters’ complex bond. Ruth Wilson believes Sarah deeply admires Zoe’s strength and independence. Emma Thompson, who plays Zoe, suggests that while Zoe is not openly emotional, there is a grudging respect.
“I think that deep down, actually, there is something in Zoe that would, absolutely, if she saw Sarah three weeks later… she’d go up and say, ‘Hello. You alright?’”
The finale provided closure on the season’s central conspiracy but left the future of this unlikely duo open-ended. The first season of Down Cemetery Road, based on the novel by Mick Herron, is available to stream in full on Apple TV+.
