Emily Cooper’s latest European adventure is over, but the drama is far from settled. Emily in Paris Season 5 arrived on Netflix on December 18, shifting part of its story to Italy before delivering a finale full of romantic cliffhangers, secret relationships, and big questions about the future. From a surprise proposal to a mysterious postcard, the season left fans wondering where Emily, Mindy, and the entire Agence Grateau crew are headed next.
Mindy’s Surprise Engagement and Complicated Heart
The season’s most shocking moment came in a Venice gondola. What Emily thought was a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Marcello, was actually for her best friend. Nicolas (Nico) popped the question to Mindy, and she said yes.
This engagement, however, is built on shaky ground. Throughout the season, Mindy and Emily’s ex-boyfriend, Alfie, developed a deep connection while Emily was in Rome. Their secret relationship was meant to be a casual travel fling, but feelings lingered even after they returned to Paris. Mindy chose to hide the affair from Emily, which later caused a major rift in their friendship. When Alfie later sees Mindy’s engagement ring, he tells her she is making a mistake, leaving her visibly shaken.
The season ends with Mindy engaged but emotionally confused. When Emily directly asks her if she still has feelings for Alfie, Mindy cannot give an answer. This leaves a massive question for a potential new season: will Mindy actually go through with the wedding to Nico?
โBy the end of the season, everything really hits the fan: Mindy might be engaged, but thereโs still tension with Alfie. Itโll be interesting to see how that drama unfolds,โ said Lily Collins, who plays Emily.
Emily and Marcello’s Final Split
Emily spent much of Season 5 in Italy, both for her job leading Agence Grateau’s Rome office and for her relationship with Italian fashion heir Marcello. Their romance faced professional hurdles, including a fallout with Marcello’s mother and a betrayal of trust when Emily discovered Marcello was negotiating to sell his family business without telling her.
After a brief breakup and a reconciliation, their relationship ended for good in the finale. During the same gondola ride where Nico proposed, Emily mistakenly believed Marcello was about to ask her to marry him. In that moment, she realized she could not leave her life in Paris and blurted out a rejection. They parted ways amicably, with both acknowledging they want different futures. Lily Collins called this split Emily’s “most mature romantic decision yet”.
Gabriel’s Open Invitation from Greece
With Emily single again, the door reopened for her original Paris flame, chef Gabriel. After a season where he largely stayed in the backgroundโworking as a private chef on a billionaire’s yachtโGabriel got a crucial text in the final moments. Sylvie informed him that Emily and Marcello had broken up.
Gabriel then wrote a postcard to Emily, inviting her to meet him in Greece, where his yacht was headed. This cliffhanger mirrors the postcards Emily once asked him to send. The show ended without revealing whether Emily will accept the invitation, placing the will-they-won’t-they question at the center of a potential new season.
Series creator Darren Star has said, โI think the doorโs always open between those twoโ. However, Lily Collins expressed uncertainty about their future, appreciating the “graceful goodbye” they shared.
Sylvie’s Business and Personal Crises
While the younger characters navigated romance, Sylvie faced severe professional and personal threats. Her agency, Agence Grateau, was pushed to the brink of financial collapse due to massive debts incurred by her husband, Laurent. Because they are still legally married, Sylvie was held responsible for his financial mistakes.
The agency was saved at the last minute by Sylvie’s old friend, Princess Jane (played by Minnie Driver), who invested in the business. However, Princess Jane’s abrasive personality and lack of marketing experience raise new questions about how she will fit into the agency’s operations. Personally, Sylvie was so furious with Laurent that she finally asked him for a divorce. Whether she follows through with it remains one of the season’s unresolved plots.

Potential for “Emily in Greece”
The finale’s postcard from Greece has led many to speculate that the show’s next logical stop is the Mediterranean. Director Andrew Fleming has openly discussed Greece as a potential location, stating, โItโs teased where we might end up going at the end of season 5 โ thereโs a possibility weโll be going there, to Greeceโ.
Darren Star has also said he hopes Emily accepts Gabriel’s invitation. While Netflix has not officially announced a Season 6, the pattern from previous seasons suggests a renewal decision could come soon. If greenlit, the new season would have to answer the biggest questions: Will Emily go to Greece? Is Mindy’s wedding on or off? And can Sylvie’s agency survive with a princess in charge?
