The upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival is bringing back almost the entire original family. But one key brother will be missing from the chaos. Erik Per Sullivan, who played the sweet and clever Dewey, said no to a very large paycheck to return for the new series.

His on-screen mother, Jane Kaczmarek, recently shared that the actor turned down a huge amount of money. His reason was simple. He is focused on his education at Harvard University and has no interest in returning to acting.

Why Erik Per Sullivan Said No to a Major Payday

Kaczmarek, who plays the family matriarch Lois, spoke with The Guardian about the revival. She explained that Sullivan is doing well with his studies. Acting is just not part of his life anymore.

“He’s studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said: ‘No thank you.’”

This news has spread quickly across entertainment news sites. Sullivan is the only main cast member from the original show who will not appear in the four-episode special. The role of Dewey has been given to actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

Bryan Cranston Also Tried to Get Him Back

Bryan Cranston, who played dad Hal, also tried to convince Sullivan to rejoin the cast. He shared a story about their phone call on the Fly on the Wall podcast last year.

Cranston recalled telling Sullivan that the show was coming back. He said they wanted him involved. Sullivan was happy for the show but made his position very clear.

“I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ And I go, ‘Yeah, so we’re looking forward to having you back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic.’”

Cranston added that Sullivan is very smart. He is working on his master’s degree at Harvard. Sullivan also told Cranston that he has not acted since he was around nine years old. He is simply not interested in the business anymore.

A Life Away From Hollywood

Sullivan stepped away from acting after Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006. He was only 14 years old at the time. Unlike many child stars, he chose school over show business.

He has stayed out of the public eye for almost 20 years. His last acting credit was in 2010. He does not give interviews or appear at fan events. Kaczmarek previously told a fan site that Sullivan is doing “very, very well.” She shared that he loves Charles Dickens and is doing graduate work in Victorian literature.

Kaczmarek also shared her respect for his choice.

“I admire it because so many people think show business is the greatest thing in the world — it’s not for everyone.”

What to Expect From ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’

The revival is officially titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. It will run for four episodes. The story follows an adult Malcolm, played again by Frankie Muniz. He is forced to return to his chaotic family for his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.

Most of the original cast is back. Christopher Kennedy Masterson and Justin Berfield will reprise their roles as brothers Francis and Reese. Emy Coligado returns as Piama, Francis’ wife. New faces include Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae playing the youngest siblings, Jamie and Kelly. Keeley Karsten plays Malcolm’s daughter, Leah, and Kiana Madeira plays his girlfriend, Tristan.

The original creator, Linwood Boomer, is back to write and produce. Cranston is also an executive producer. Ken Kwapis, who directed many episodes of the original series, directed all four episodes.

Release Date and Streaming Details

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair arrives on Thursday, April 10, 2026.

For viewers in the United States, the series will stream on Hulu. International viewers can watch on Disney+. In India, the show will be available on JioHotstar. The revival brings back the same single-camera style and loud family humor that made the original a hit.

The original show ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006. It won seven Emmy Awards during its run. Fans have waited nearly 20 years to see the Wilkerson family again. While Dewey will look different this time, the rest of the family is ready to bring the mayhem back to screens.
