Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, made sure The Witcher Season 4 kept key parts from the original book series. She pushed for book accuracy after Henry Cavill, known for his dedication to the source material, left the show. Her efforts mean important storylines and character moments from the novels “Baptism of Fire” and “The Tower of the Swallow” are part of the new season.

Continuing the Fight for Book Accuracy

After Henry Cavill’s exit from the series, fans wondered if the show would keep its connection to Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. Freya Allan decided to take on that responsibility. In a recent interview, she explained her motivation.

“I really want to give fans what they want,” Allan said. “I’d also seen Henry, who was so knowledgeable and loyal to the books, push for certain lines to be included. When he left, I was inspired to take on that role.”

This wasn’t just talk. Allan worked directly with showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich during the filming of Seasons 4 and 5. She frequently arrived with her own marked-up copies of the books, pointing out moments she felt were essential to include. Showrunner Hissrich noted that Allan’s deep involvement with the source material grew significantly over the course of the series.

A Pivotal Book Moment in the Season 4 Finale

Allan’s push for accuracy had a direct impact on one of the season’s most important scenes. The finale features a violent confrontation where the bounty hunter Leo Bonhart slaughters Ciri’s found family, a group called the Rats. Ciri arrives too late to save them and is captured.

This dark turn is a major event in the books, and Allan was adamant that the show not shy away from it. She expressed relief that the creative team decided to portray it faithfully.

“I’m glad they stuck to the books for that. It’s such a pivotal part of Ciri’s journey,” Allan stated. “There are sometimes certain things that Netflix is afraid to bring to life but I’m glad they stuck to the books for that.”

Henry Cavill’s Lasting Influence

Freya Allan’s actions continue a tradition started by Henry Cavill. From the beginning, Cavill was a well-known fan of both the Witcher books and video games. He actively campaigned for the role of Geralt and was famously dedicated to bringing a book-accurate version of the character to screen.

In past interviews, Cavill detailed his approach: “The things that I pushed for [were] not necessarily just more dialogue. It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen.” This dedication made him a favorite among the book-loving fan base. Allan revealed that Cavill’s departure was deeply personal for her, to the point where she considered leaving the show.

The Challenge of a New Geralt

Season 4 introduced Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia, following Henry Cavill’s departure after Season 3. This major recast presented a challenge for the entire cast. Freya Allan admitted that not working with Cavill felt “very weird,” calling him “the Geralt I grew up with”.

Despite this difficult change, Allan and the cast welcomed Hemsworth. She has also spoken positively about her experience working with him. The season continues Ciri’s story from the books, which sees her separated from Geralt and Yennefer and falling in with the Rats gang, setting the stage for her confrontation with Bonhart.

What’s Next for Ciri and The Witcher?

With Ciri imprisoned by Leo Bonhart at the end of Season 4, her story will conclude in the already-filmed The Witcher Season 5. This final season is expected to resolve this cliffhanger and adapt the remaining book material. Freya Allan has confirmed that filming for the series is complete, marking the end of her journey as Ciri.

The Witcher Season 4 is available to stream globally on Netflix.
