Girls Generation members Hyoyeon and Seohyun recently appeared on the YouTube show Zzanbro, hosted by Shin Dong Yup. The two idols opened up about their dating experiences, struggles during their early debut days, and how they handled harsh public criticism.
During the show, Shin Dong Yup asked Seohyun about her ideal partner. She responded, “Someone who is mentally healthy.” This led to a deeper discussion about past relationships.
Hyoyeon shared a personal story about dating someone who constantly doubted her kindness. “I once dated someone like that. But he would say things like, ‘I’m just watching to see how long you can keep pretending to be nice.’ Looking back, I realized how emotionally tied up I was. He’d always say things like, ‘How long are you going to keep reading self-help books?’ That’s when I knew something wasn’t right.”
When asked if she still thought her ex was a good person, Hyoyeon replied, “Yes. Everyone can be lame sometimes. But I’d rather deal with someone cool who’s lame once in a while than someone who’s just uncool all the time.”
The conversation then shifted to their early days in Girls’ Generation. Shin Dong Yup pointed out how young they were when they debuted and how negative comments must have affected them.
Hyoyeon admitted, “I was really sad. People kept criticizing my looks. But I was actually really popular. I admit I had a strong look, but it still hurt to be judged on appearance.”
Seohyun supported her, saying, “It wasn’t about how you looked. There were just too many haters back then. You danced so hard—of course you couldn’t always look perfect. They’d just screenshot extreme moments and twist them.”
Hyoyeon reflected on her mindset at the time, “I can’t control how people judge appearances. So I told myself, ‘Fine. I’ll beat them with my talent. They just don’t have an eye for greatness.’”
Shin Dong Yup praised her resilience, saying, “Hyoyeon is seriously cool.” Seohyun agreed, adding, “Unnie, you’re amazing.”
This isn’t the first time Hyoyeon and Seohyun have spoken about their past struggles. Earlier this year, Seohyun revealed on Hyoyeon’s YouTube show that she often cried due to playful teasing from her older Girls’ Generation members. She shared how she has since grown stronger and can now joke around with them.
Hyoyeon also recently appeared on her own show with TWICE’s Momo, where they discussed heartwarming interactions with other idols, including Girls Generation’s YoonA.
The episode of Zzanbro featuring Hyoyeon and Seohyun has already gained significant attention, with fans praising their honesty and strength. Many commented on how relatable their experiences are, especially regarding dating and dealing with public scrutiny.
