Girls’ Generation‘s Hyoyeon revealed her personal experience with a business failure during a recent appearance on SBS Power FM’s ‘Cultwo Show’ on October 4. Joined by Brian Joo as a special guest, Hyoyeon spoke about how she ventured into the food industry by opening a dumpling and buckwheat noodle restaurant in Los Angeles.
Hyoyeon shared that the restaurant was managed by her family members. “I didn’t run it myself; my younger sibling and parents were in charge,” she explained. However, due to visa complications, her parents couldn’t continue managing the restaurant, leading her sibling and their spouse to take over the operations. Unfortunately, the situation took a turn for the worse due to unforeseen factors.
She mentioned that the restaurant’s downfall was influenced by Los Angeles’ cooler-than-expected weather at the time. “LA’s temperature was between 10 to 17 degrees Celsius (50 – 63 degrees Fahrenheit), and I thought LA was supposed to be warm,” Hyoyeon said. “I watched the CCTV and saw customers wearing long sleeves and padded jackets, which didn’t help the business, as buckwheat noodles are a summer dish.” This mismatch in seasonal demand eventually caused the business to fail.
In a lighthearted tone, Hyoyeon added, “The maintenance costs, combined with my sibling’s housing expenses, were enormous. I’ve decided I’ll never open a business again.”
During the show, Kim Tae Gyun, one of the DJs, also shared his own business struggles. “I tried running various businesses when my performances were popular in Daehangno, but none of them succeeded,” he admitted. Kim ended up trading his failed business for land in Chungju but humorously noted, “Nothing grows on that land, and I can’t even sell it.”
