Golden Globes 2026 Nominations: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises Revealed

The nominations for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards are officially in, setting the stage for the 2026 awards season. The list reveals a year of unexpected choices, where major blockbusters missed key categories and international films gained historic recognition. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT.

Major Film Snubs That Shocked Fans

Several high-profile movies and talents were notably absent from this year’s list, creating immediate conversation among awards watchers.

The most discussed omission is Wicked: For Good missing from the Best Motion Picture โ€“ Musical or Comedy category. This is particularly surprising given that the first Wicked film was nominated in the same category last year. The sequel still earned five nominations, including acting nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and recognition for its original songs.

The third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, was completely shut out. This marks a stark change for the popular franchise, as the first two films earned multiple Globe nominations, including Best Picture for Glass Onion.

In the acting categories, Wunmi Mosaku was considered a strong contender for her supporting role in the critically praised film Sinners, especially after winning a Gotham Award for the performance. Her absence was highlighted as a significant snub. Similarly, Sydney Sweeney was left out of the competitive Best Actress in a Drama race for her work in Christy, a film that struggled at the box office.

Unexpected Surprises in the Nominations

The nominations were not without their positive shocks, with several unexpected names and films earning spots.

A major trend was the overwhelming success of international films and the independent distributor Neon. Neon films collected a leading 21 nominations, surpassing major studios. Films like Sentimental Value from Norway, It Was Just an Accident from Iran, and The Secret Agent from Brazil broke out of the traditional “Best Non-English Language Film” category to earn spots in the main Best Picture (Drama) race.

The days of international features being siloed to only that category are now officially over.

In the acting categories, Eva Victor earned a surprise nomination for Best Actress in a Drama for the independent film Sorry, Baby, a role she also wrote and directed. Veteran actress Emily Blunt secured her eighth career Globe nomination for The Smashing Machine, a performance that had not been widely pegged as a frontrunner. Glen Powell also scored a nomination for Best Actor in a TV Comedy for Chad Powers, a show that did not become a major hit with critics.

Notable Television Omissions and Recognitions

The television categories mirrored the films with a mix of predictable favorites and puzzling absences.

HBO’s acclaimed new thriller Task earned only a single nomination for Mark Ruffalo, missing out on Best Drama Series and nods for its celebrated supporting cast. The final season of The Last of Us was also completely overlooked.

Several new and critically adored shows failed to break into the lineup. FX’s The Lowdown, from producer Sterlin Harjo, was left out despite strong reviews. Netflix’s historical drama Death by Lightning and Taylor Sheridan’s Landman were also absent.

On the surprise side, Rhea Seehorn finally received Golden Globe recognition for leading the drama Pluribus, after years of being overlooked for her work on Better Call Saul. Jacob Elordi scored two nominations, one for the film Frankenstein and another for the television limited series The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

The New Podcast Category Makes a Quiet Debut

For the first time, the Golden Globes introduced an award for Best Podcast. The category notably avoided the chart-dominating political talk shows, with eligible contenders like Ben Shapiro and Joe Rogan not making the shortlist.

Instead, the nominations favored shows hosted by well-known entertainment figures. The nominees are Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, SmartLess, and Up First from NPR.

Key Ceremony Details and Honorees

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Comedian Nikki Glaser will return as host.

In the days leading up to the main event, a new primetime special called Golden Eve will air on CBS on Thursday, January 8. This special will honor this year’s lifetime achievement award recipients: Helen Mirren, who will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Sarah Jessica Parker, who will be given the Carol Burnett Award.

The complete list of nominees across all 28 categories is available on the Golden Globes website.
