Jean Smart admits she worried fans would turn against her Deborah Vance after the heavy fourth season of the HBO Max series. Now, with the final season arriving this month, the 74-year-old actress promises a return to the comedy that made the show a hit.

The fifth and final season of Hacks is set to premiere on April 9, 2026, on HBO Max. The show will release two episodes on opening night at 9 p.m. ET, followed by weekly episodes until the series finale on May 28. For viewers in the UK, the show streams on Sky Comedy and NOW. Australian fans can watch on Stan. Canadian viewers find it on Crave, while Indian audiences can stream on Disney+ Hotstar.

Smart Admits Concern After Darker Season 4 Storylines

The actress recently opened up about her worries following the previous season’s more serious direction. Jean Smart said that season four got “a little bit dark,” and she feared how audiences would respond.

“Because Season 4 got a little bit dark (and I think we had earned it), I was worried that people would hate me.” – Jean Smart

Her concerns turned out to be unnecessary. Viewers stayed with the show. Smart explained, “But because they cared so much, they were willing to go anywhere with us, which was really wonderful”.

The fourth season pushed Deborah Vance into unfamiliar territory. After landing her dream late-night hosting job, she walked away rather than fire her writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). The season ended with Deborah in Singapore, performing through a translator while under a non-compete agreement.

Season 5 Brings Back the Comedy and ‘Silly’ Fun

The final season marks a clear shift back to the show’s comedic roots. Smart said the creative team is returning to what made the series connect with audiences in the first place.

“In Season 5, we get to get back to being profoundly silly, which is really, really fun,” Smart stated.

Paul W. Downs, who co-created the series and plays manager Jimmy, shared that the team finally got to include ideas they had wanted to do for years. One such moment involved a camera going down a character’s mouth, an idea Downs had been suggesting since earlier seasons.

The showrunners also wanted Deborah to date a younger pop star. “A lot of young pop stars are really into Jean and so, we were like, ‘We gotta do that!’” Downs revealed.

The Final Season’s Story Picks Up After Death Rumors

Season five begins with Deborah Vance dealing with the fallout from false news reports about her death. The mistaken reports shake her out of a creative slump during her time in Singapore.

The official logline states that Deborah and Ava return to Las Vegas more determined than ever to secure Deborah’s legacy as a comedian.

The final season runs for 10 episodes. New episodes will air weekly, with two episodes dropping on April 30 and May 7 before the finale on May 28.

Smart Says Goodbye to a Character That Redefined Her Career

The actress has won four Primetime Emmy Awards for playing Deborah Vance. She admitted that saying goodbye has been harder than expected.

“I’m not ever gonna play Deborah again,” Smart told reporters. “I’m going to miss her. It’s weird. They feel like real people to us”.

The reality of the show ending hit Smart as the production team started taking down the sets. “It started to become very real to me as the season went on; they started wrapping certain sets, like when we were shooting in Deborah’s house, which I love that house,” she shared.

She described the house set as “like running around a big giant dollhouse because they copied a giant mansion in Bel Air and recreated it on stage at Universal. It’s absolutely stunning”.

Smart admitted she took small souvenirs from each set. “The first time it happened, they said, ‘Okay, that’s a wrap, that’s a series wrap on Deborah’s bedroom.’ I was like, we’re never gonna sleep in this bedroom again?” she recalled.

The Cast and Creators Reflect on the Journey

Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava Daniels, described the final season as filled with small goodbyes rather than one big moment. She said goodbye to the Los Angeles crew, then the Las Vegas crew, and finally ended in Paris, where they wrapped twice.

Smart revealed she never asked the creators how the series would end. “I have never asked [the creators] how the series was going to end from the day we met until the finale,” she said.

When the creators finally told her the ending, she had mixed feelings. “I was not sure I was real happy about it, but I said, ‘Hey, you know, I trust you guys. I always have and it always turns out great and it did. Now I think it’s kind of perfect, and it’s really great’”.

Christopher Briney from The Summer I Turned Pretty joins the final season as a guest star. Returning cast includes Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo.

Smart Reflects on Changing Roles for Older Women

At 74, Smart sees Hacks as part of a larger change in how the entertainment industry writes for women. She credits her role on 24 as First Lady Martha Logan as a turning point in her career.

“Even in the high school play, I always played mom. I don’t know, if it was my height, my deep voice,” Smart said.

She pointed out that for years, movies focused almost entirely on male stories. “Because men were the ones that were out in the world doing things. Women were not out in the world doing things, which is why everything was written about men,” she explained.

That has changed. “Now they’re realizing that women can be just as three-dimensional and older women can have the same kind of lives and desires and things that women who are 30 do,” Smart added.

Hacks Season 5 debuts April 9 on HBO Max and will serve as the series finale after five award-winning seasons.
