The final episodes of Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 2 are now streaming on Netflix, bringing the complex Taiwanese thriller to a dramatic close. The series, which follows a serial killer and the interviewer uncovering his past, finished its story on December 11, 2025. The ending reveals the true identities of key characters and shows the final consequences for Li Jen-yao.

The Connection Between Chou Pin-yu and Hsiao-tung

The central mystery of Part 2 is the real identity of Chou Pin-yu, the documentary assistant interviewing Jen-yao in prison. The story reveals that Pin-yu is not a separate person but another identity created by Chiang Hsiao-tung, Jen-yao’s childhood friend and love interest.

After a traumatic assault by a group of classmates, Hsiao-tung’s life changed completely. To cope with the emotional pain and the public shaming that followed, her mind created new personalities. She first lived as Tien-ching, a blind radio DJ, with no memory of her past. Later, she created the identity of Chou Pin-yu, modeled after a colleague she admired. This explains why Jen-yao agreed to the documentary interviewโ€”he recognized Hsiao-tung standing before him, even with her changed appearance.

“She adopts the name Tien-ching who aspires to become a radio DJ, effectively ‘killing’ Hsiao-tung. The trauma also causes her to block her memories entirely, fully embracing this new identity.”

Jen-yao’s Path to Revenge and Murder

While Hsiao-tung lived with new identities, Jen-yao carried the memory of her trauma. His journey toward becoming the “Rainstorm Killer” began in 2014, after he was released from prison for a previous assault. Upon learning the full truth of what happened to Hsiao-tung and seeing her continued suffering, he decided to take revenge on everyone involved.

His first murder was an impulsive act after spotting one of the attackers. This event started a calculated mission where he tracked down each person responsible. He received help from Yun-chen, Hsiao-tung’s best friend and Pin-yu’s cousin, who witnessed one of the killings. Jen-yao’s final act of violence was against his own abusive father, whom he killed after finding him attacking his mother. Following this, he turned himself in to the police and confessed to all the murders.

The Final Reunion and Jen-yao’s Execution

When Pin-yu finally remembers her past as Hsiao-tung, she goes to see Jen-yao in prison. Their reunion is emotional, filled with memories of their school days. Hsiao-tung wants to participate in the documentary to share the reasons behind his crimes, hoping it might reduce his sentence, but Jen-yao refuses. He does not want her past trauma exposed to the public again.

The political pressure from the family of one of his victims leads to his execution being scheduled abruptly. On Christmas Day, just hours before he is set to die, Hsiao-tung sends him a gift. Jen-yao is executed by gunshot before he can open it. His final request is to hear a song Hsiao-tung used to dance to, and he dies imagining her smile.

What Happens to Hsiao-tung in the End

After Jen-yao’s death, Hsiao-tung is left to rebuild her life. She keeps a promise she made to him by finally taking ballet lessons and performing on stage. In a poignant scene, she takes his ashes to the beach, fulfilling a trip they had once planned together. The public narrative shifts after Jen-yao’s death, as news breaks about the illicit activities of Ouyang Ti and his gang, casting new doubt on the fairness of his punishment.

The series concludes with Hsiao-tung reading a letter Jen-yao wrote to her after her first prison visit as Chou Pin-yu. The final scene shows her walking toward the ocean. A mid-credits scene suggests a symbolic reunion for the couple in an afterlife, finally able to decorate a Christmas tree together as they had wished.
