Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry has opened up about her sudden departure from Ryan Murphy‘s upcoming Hulu legal drama All’s Fair, a project starring Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close. Berry confirmed her exit was due to scheduling conflicts, expressing optimism about the show’s future despite her absence.
Berry’s Red Carpet Revelation
Halle Berry addressed her departure publicly for the first time on the red carpet for the premiere of her Netflix film The Union. When asked about leaving All’s Fair, she shared her thoughts directly.
โYou know, things happen for a reason,โ Berry told Entertainment Tonight. โ[But] I would have loved to have been there with those ladies, and I know itโs gonna be great.โ
She added her full support for the project, stating, โ[Itโs] Ryan Murphy! I mean, you know duh, but next time!โ Her comments confirm that the split was amicable and centered on timing issues with other professional commitments.
A Sudden Exit from the Cast
News of Berry’s exit broke in July 2024, merely a week after it was officially announced that she had joined the series. Initial reports revealed that she would no longer star in or executive produce the show. Sources close to the situation confirmed that her departure was due to a scheduling conflict with another project.
The quick turnaround surprised fans and industry watchers. Berry was initially part of an A-list cast that included Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, and Naomi Watts. Her role in the series, which would have been her first regular television role since CBS’s Extant in 2015, was never publicly disclosed.
Inside “All’s Fair” and Its Star-Studded Team
All’s Fair is a significant project as the first series from Ryan Murphy under his new overall deal with Disney. The show is described by Murphy as a high-end, glossy, and sexy adult procedural. The legal drama is set in an all-female law firm in Los Angeles, with Kim Kardashian playing Los Angeles’ most successful divorce lawyer and the owner of the firm.
The series is created by Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. In addition to Kardashian, executive producers include Murphy, Glenn Close, Kris Jenner, and many of the show’s writers and stars. The project is one of five shows that received a share of $58 million in tax credits from the California Film Commission and is expected to film for 97 days within the state.
Berry’s Packed Professional Schedule
The scheduling conflict that prompted Berry’s exit is understandable given her busy slate of upcoming projects. At the time of her departure, the actress was preparing for the release of two major films.
She stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in the Netflix action film The Union, which premiered on August 16, 2024. She also headlines the Lionsgate horror film Never Let Go, directed by Alexandre Aja, which is scheduled for release on September 27, 2024. Furthermore, Berry is set to co-star with Angelina Jolie in the action thriller Maude v Maude, which would have directly competed for her time.
The Show Must Go On
With Berry’s exit, the cast of All’s Fair continues with its other high-profile stars. Kim Kardashian, who previously worked with Ryan Murphy on American Horror Story: Delicate, leads the cast. Glenn Close, an Emmy winner for her role in the legal drama Damages, also stars and executive produces.
The series does not yet have an official release date, but production is expected to begin later in 2024. Despite the recasting, the combination of Ryan Murphy’s production, Kim Kardashian’s rising acting profile, and a powerhouse cast suggests the show remains one of Hulu’s most anticipated new dramas.
