Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca Bridgerton in the hit Netflix series, has shared new details about her character’s complex emotions towards Michaela Stirling in the upcoming season. This follows the major gender-swapped twist for the character introduced in Season 3. As Bridgerton Season 4 launched on January 29, 2026, the show is setting the stage for Francesca’s future storyline, which has been confirmed as a lead plot for a later season.

Francesca’s Challenging Dynamic with Michaela

In a recent interview, Hannah Dodd explained the unique dynamic between Francesca and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. Dodd described Michaela as a figure who profoundly challenges Francesca’s worldview.

โ€œI think Michaela is a character that challenges Francesca whereas John is a character that makes space for Francesca. Theyโ€™re both really important for Francesca to move forward,โ€ Dodd stated.

Dodd elaborated that Francesca lives her life bound by strict rules, both from society and those she imposes on herself. Michaela, in contrast, represents a freedom from those constraints. Dodd compared this to meeting someone in modern life who makes you question your own feelings and choices. She called the attraction a confronting feeling for Francesca, noting it is both new and challenging.

The Foundation from Season 3 and Upcoming Focus

The connection between Francesca and Michaela was first sparked in Bridgerton Season 3. After a quiet debut into society, Francesca formed a genuine bond with the kind Lord John Stirling, played by Victor Alli. They married and made plans to move to his home in Scotland with his cousin, Michaela. Their initial meeting at a ball left a notable impression on Francesca, though she could not fully understand it at the time.

As of the start of Season 4, Francesca and John have returned to London from Scotland. Dodd notes that Francesca is currently focused on investing time in her new marriage, as the couple has barely had time to build a life together as husband and wife. Season 4 itself will primarily follow the romance between Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek, a story inspired by the Cinderella fairy tale. However, the new season will continue to develop subplots for other siblings, including Francesca.

A Planned Queer Storyline with the Author’s Support

The shift of John’s cousin from Michael in Julia Quinn’s novels to Michaela on the show was a deliberate creative decision. Showrunner Jess Brownell has stated that she planned to explore a queer storyline for Francesca from the show’s first season, looking to the books for thematic inspiration rather than just inserting a queer character.

โ€œThe reveal of Michaela vs. Michael โ€” from the books โ€” is something that Iโ€™ve been pitching from season 1 of the show,โ€ Brownell revealed.

Brownell sought and received the full blessing of original author Julia Quinn before moving forward with the change. Quinn later expressed confidence that Francesca’s adapted story would be deeply emotional and powerful, potentially even more so because the character of John has been developed more for television.

Confirmed Future for Francesca and Eloise

The long-term plan for Francesca’s romance is now clear. At the Season 4 premiere in Paris, showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed the lead couples for the next two seasons. She pointed to the initials on her pocket squares: ‘E’ for Eloise and ‘F’ for Francesca.

This means Francesca and Michaela’s love story will be a central focus of Bridgerton Season 6, adapting the novel When He Was Wicked. Eloise Bridgerton’s story, based on To Sir Phillip, With Love, will lead Season 5. This official confirmation aligns with the book series, where Francesca’s story is the sixth installment.

Actress Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise, has shared her excitement about eventually exploring her character’s unique approach to love and romance.
