The wizarding world just revealed when fans can finally return to Hogwarts. HBO has officially set a premiere date for its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, and the news came alongside the first look at the new cast in action.
The network released a two-minute teaser trailer on March 25, giving audiences their first glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin as the boy who lived, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The trailer ends with the announcement that Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the show’s first season, will debut on Christmas Day 2026.
Series Arrives Earlier Than Expected
The Christmas 2026 premiere moves the release date up from the original 2027 target. HBO Max will stream the eight-episode first season exclusively, with availability in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, Italy, and other global markets.
Production has been underway for several months at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, the same location where the original films were shot. The series plans to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books across multiple seasons, with the first season covering Harry’s first year at Hogwarts.
New Cast Brings Iconic Characters to Life
The casting process drew from over 32,000 audition tapes before selecting the three leads. McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout join a lineup of established actors playing the Hogwarts professors and adult characters.
John Lithgow takes on the role of Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. The full cast includes Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy.
The Dursley family will be played by Bel Powley (Petunia), Daniel Rigby (Vernon), and Amos Kitson (Dudley). Additional Hogwarts students include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, and Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil.
Daniel Radcliffe Reaches Out to New Harry
The original Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe, has already made contact with his successor. Radcliffe sent a letter to McLaughlin after the young actor was cast, and McLaughlin responded with a note of his own.
Radcliffe shared his thoughts about watching new actors take on the roles he originated.
“I just want to hug them. I don’t want to be a weird spectral phantom in these children’s lives. I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did’.”
Behind the Scenes Creative Team
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, serves as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod, who directed multiple episodes of Game of Thrones, will executive produce and direct several episodes of the first season.
David Heyman, a producer on all eight original Harry Potter films, returns as executive producer alongside J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts. Composer Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers Music will create a new musical score for the series.
Casting Discussions Emerge Online
Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape has generated discussion online, with the actor recently revealing he received threats following the announcement. HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed that producers have implemented security measures on set in response.
“With all actors on any kind of big IP shows — and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions — it can get scary in places,” Bloys told Variety.
Essiedu addressed the situation in a recent interview, emphasizing the story’s core themes remain unchanged despite the outside noise.
