HBO Max has officially announced that And Just Like That will end with its current third season. The Sex and the City revival series will conclude with a two-part finale airing on August 14, 2025. Showrunner Michael Patrick King made the announcement alongside star Sarah Jessica Parker, who shared an emotional farewell to her iconic character Carrie Bradshaw after playing the role for 27 years.
The decision to end the series was made by King and Parker together with HBO executives Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey. They expanded the final season from 10 to 12 episodes to give the show a proper send-off. King explained that while writing the last episode, it became clear this was the right time to conclude the story.
“And just like thatโฆ the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” King said in his announcement. “SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season. It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
Sarah Jessica Parker’s Emotional Goodbye To Carrie Bradshaw
Sarah Jessica Parker posted a heartfelt tribute to Carrie Bradshaw on Instagram, reflecting on nearly three decades of playing the beloved character. Her message included a poetic summary of Carrie’s journey through life, love and New York City.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” Parker wrote. “She crossed streets, avenues, rubicons, so it seemed. She broke hearts, heels, habits. She loved, lost, won, tripped, leaped, fell short and into puddles, aged, got wiser.”
Parker thanked the fans who have followed Carrie’s story since Sex and the City began in 1998. She acknowledged that viewers have had mixed feelings about the character over the years but appreciated their ongoing support. The actress also praised her co-stars and the hundreds of crew members who worked on both series.
“AJLT was all joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us,” Parker added. “I am better for every single day I spent with you. It will be forever before I forget.”
The Journey Of And Just Like That
And Just Like That premiered in December 2021 as a sequel to the original Sex and the City series. It brought back three of the four main characters – Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). Kim Cattrall did not return as Samantha except for a brief cameo in season 2.
The show explored the women navigating life in their 50s with storylines including:
- Carrie grieving the sudden death of her husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth)
- Miranda’s midlife identity crisis and relationship with comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez)
- Charlotte balancing motherhood and marriage
- New friendships with characters like Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury) and Lisa Todd Wexley (Nicole Ari Parker)
Season 2 saw Carrie rekindle her romance with ex-fiancรฉ Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), though they ultimately broke up in season 3. The current season has focused on Carrie moving forward alone while Miranda explores new relationships and Charlotte faces family challenges.
Ratings And Fan Reactions
While And Just Like That started strong, viewership has declined over time. The season 3 premiere drew 429,000 households, down from 463,000 for season 2 and significantly lower than season 1’s record numbers. The show has generated mixed reactions, with some fans criticizing storylines while others appreciated seeing the characters evolve.
Online discussions have been active, with many viewers sharing strong opinions about character developments. Some fans expressed disappointment about how certain relationships ended, while others defended the show’s creative choices.
“What was the point of this bad show? To cash in on nostalgia? Bad writing & bad character development ruined one of the best shows ever made,” wrote one fan on social media.
“For the people who hated AJLT they didn’t get it, don’t want to grow and grow up. People come – some stay and some go. This was the best season and they are all where they are supposed to be,” countered another viewer.
What’s Next For The Cast
With And Just Like That ending, the actors are moving on to other projects. Sarah Jessica Parker will return for Hocus Pocus 3 and recently served as a judge for the Booker Prize. Showrunner Michael Patrick King is developing a third season of The Comeback starring Lisa Kudrow.
Original Sex and the City stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis also shared their thoughts about the series ending. Davis posted that she was “profoundly sad” while Nixon thanked Parker and the crew for “the quarter century of memories and friendships.”
The Sex and the City franchise began in 1998 and includes six seasons of the original show, two movies, and now three seasons of And Just Like That. The two-part series finale airs August 14, 2025 on HBO Max.
