The third and final season of Heartbreak High arrived on Netflix on March 25, 2026, giving fans the long-awaited answers about the Hartley High crew’s fate. After a two-year wait, viewers finally discovered who Amerie Wadia chooses in her complicated love story between her past and present.
The eight-episode final season follows Amerie and her friends through their last semester of high school. A simple prank against the rival school, St Bruno’s, spirals into a criminal investigation that threatens to destroy everyone’s futures. Along the way, Amerie must decide whether to hold onto her new relationship or revisit the unfinished romance that has haunted her since season two.
The Return of Malakai and the Letter That Changed Everything
Thomas Weatherall returns as Malakai Mitchell, who left for Geneva with his family at the end of season two. Before leaving, he wrote Amerie a letter confessing his true feelings. The letter burned in the school fire, meaning Amerie never knew it existed.
In season three, Malakai comes back to Sydney and finally tells Amerie what he wrote. The letter revealed:
“Thank you for being my first love. Sometimes I think we just met each other at the wrong time. Maybe it would have been better if we met at 30 or 60 or even 80 in a nursing home. I guess s**t is sometimes all about timing.”
This confession arrives at a complicated moment. Amerie has been dating Noah (Ioane Sa’ula), a student from St Bruno’s, for nearly a year. When Malakai finally speaks his truth, Amerie tells him he is too late and chooses to stay with Noah.
Why Amerie’s Relationship With Noah Didn’t Last
Noah enters the picture during the time Malakai was away. The Samoan Australian actor Ioane Sa’ula, who previously appeared in The Fall Guy and the Australian series Bump, brings Noah to life as a steady presence in Amerie’s life.
But their relationship faces pressure when the carnival prank investigation heats up. Noah disagrees with Amerie’s choices as she risks her reputation to protect her friends and uncover the truth. This fundamental difference in values leads to their breakup, leaving Amerie single as graduation approaches.
Who Does Amerie Choose in the Finale
The series finale sees Amerie planning to leave town on a road trip with her best friend Harper to figure out what she wants from life. As she prepares to drive away, Malakai chases her down to say goodbye properly this time.
He wants to make sure she knows he will not make the same mistake again. This gesture makes Amerie realize that sometimes second chances are worth taking. She gets out of the car, and the two share a kiss. They decide to figure out their future together.
Amerie still goes on her road trip, and Malakai agrees to wait for her return. The ending shows two people who met at the wrong time finally finding their moment when the timing is right.
How the Carnival Mystery Unfolded
The love story plays out against a larger mystery. The season begins with a prank war between Hartley High and St Bruno’s. After students from St Bruno’s steal the head of Hartley’s mascot, Amerie steals a saint’s bust from the rival school and gets her friends to hide it at the local carnival.
The plan goes wrong when carnival owner Clancy catches them. During the chaos, the ride suddenly starts up while Malakai is on it. The accident leaves Malakai with a dislocated shoulder and Clancy in a coma.
The group escapes before police arrive, but they spend the rest of the season trying to figure out who turned on the ride. Suspicion first falls on Liam, Clancy’s stepson, after dashcam footage shows someone in a bunny mask fleeing the scene.
But the truth comes out during the Schoolies trip. Sasha (Gemma Chua-Tran) was also at the carnival that night. She discovered that Amerie and the others created a group chat to exclude her from their plans. Feeling hurt and left out, she put on Liam’s costume, hid in the control booth, and turned on the ride to ruin their prank.
Sasha did not mean to hurt anyone, but her actions put Clancy in a coma and almost cost her friends their futures. She takes responsibility, turning herself in to police and accepting the consequences.

The Dashcam Footage That Saved Everyone
The dashcam footage from Sebastian’s car plays a key role in clearing the Hartley High seniors. It proves that Noah and Seb never entered the carnival grounds, removing suspicion from them. More importantly, the footage captures the masked figure running away, leading authorities to the real culprit.
With this evidence, the charges against Amerie and her friends are dropped. Principal Woodsy reverses their expulsion just in time for them to take their final exams and graduate with the rest of their class.
Where All the Characters End Up
The final season gives each character a proper sendoff:
- Spider (Bryn Chapman Parish) becomes a coach for young students
- Missy (Sherry-Lee Watson) gets into college sports
- Quinni (Chloé Hayden) pursues writing
- Darren (James Majoos) follows acting dreams, with Ca$h (Will McDonald) supporting them
- Ant (Brodie Townsend) becomes a plumber, going against his mother’s wishes
- Harper (Asher Yasbincek) focuses on becoming a visual artist
The season serves as the final chapter of the series. Executive producer Carly Heaton confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that season three would wrap up all storylines. The show will not return for a fourth season.
