The gang is getting back together for another adventure, but when Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys return to theaters this summer, some of them will sound a little different. Toy Story 5 is officially set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026, and while most of the main voice cast like Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) are coming back, a few familiar characters have new actors voicing them .
The new movie brings the toys back to face a modern problem. This time, they are competing for their kid Bonnie’s attention against a brand-new high-tech tablet named Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee . The story continues after Woody left the group at the end of Toy Story 4 to be with Bo Peep and help other lost toys. Now, he returns to help the gang figure out how to stay loved when kids are more interested in screens .

The main cast members returning to Andy’s room
Most of the toys you grew up with are coming back with the same voices you remember. Tom Hanks is back as the cowboy doll Woody, and Tim Allen returns as space ranger Buzz Lightyear . Joan Cusack will once again voice the energetic yodeling cowgirl Jessie .
The supporting toy box favorites are also returning with their original actors. John Ratzenberger, who has voiced the piggy bank Hamm in every single Toy Story movie, is back . Wallace Shawn returns as the nervous dinosaur Rex, and Blake Clark continues as the loyal dachshund Slinky Dog . The Potato Head couple gets new voices
One of the biggest changes for Toy Story 5 involves the beloved couple, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. The original voices, Don Rickles and Estelle Harris, passed away in 2017 and 2022 respectively . For the new movie, Jeff Bergman will take over as Mr. Potato Head, and Anna Vocino will voice Mrs. Potato Head . Bergman is a veteran voice actor known for taking over classic cartoon roles, including voicing Bugs Bunny and Fred Flintstone.
New actors step in for Combat Carl and Mr. Pricklepants
Along with the Potato Heads, two other roles have new voices behind them. Ernie Hudson is taking over the role of Combat Carl . The character was previously voiced by the late Carl Weathers, who passed away in 2024. Hudson is known for his iconic role in the Ghostbusters films.
Similarly, the character Mr. Pricklepants now has a new voice. While John Hopkins is listed as voicing the character, he is taking over from Timothy Dalton, who voiced the thespian hedgehog in previous films .
The new toys joining the gang in Toy Story 5
Pixar is introducing several new characters to the world this time around. The main antagonist of the movie appears to be Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet that wants to be the center of Bonnie’s world. She is voiced by Greta Lee, known for her roles in Past Lives and The Morning Show .
Conan O’Brien joins the cast as Smarty Pants, a new tech toy that seems to be a toilet training device with a mind of its own . Craig Robinson voices Atlas, described as a cheerful talking GPS hippo toy . Shelby Rabara voices Snappy, an excitable camera toy . Matty Matheson, a chef and actor known for The Bear, voices Dr. Nutcase, a toy who is apparently afraid of technology .
The movie will also feature a young girl named Blaze, voiced by Mykal-Michelle Harris, who is described as an independent eight-year-old who loves animals . Scarlett Spears will voice Bonnie, the owner of the toys . Melissa Villaseñor returns as Karen Beverly, Bonnie’s homemade toy made from a plastic knife .
The story behind the toys vs. tech battle
Toy Story 5 is directed by Andrew Stanton, who helmed Finding Nemo and WALL-E . According to Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, the theme of toys versus technology is something the studio felt was very relevant for today’s kids .
“I think it’s especially relevant today because of the tech and how that’s changed the world. Look around you at a restaurant, kids are looking at their iPhones and not playing with plastic figures anymore,” Docter told IGN .
The official synopsis confirms that the toys will have their hands full with Lilypad. “The toys are back and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie” .
The trailer shows Jessie confronting Lilypad directly, telling her that the toys have been working hard to keep Bonnie happy. Woody eventually returns to help, even though Buzz and the others make fun of his new poncho .
When and where to watch Toy Story 5
Toy Story 5 will be released exclusively in theaters on June 19, 2026 . It will be available in most major markets around the same time, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India. The film features an original score by Randy Newman, who has composed music for every film in the series .
