In the latest episode of High Potential, the team’s investigation into a new death uncovers a forgotten murder from decades ago. At the same time, Lieutenant Selena Soto receives disappointing career news that shakes the foundation of the close-knit unit.

The Case of a Forgotten Witness

The episode, “Behind the Music,” begins with a distressed 911 call from a woman named Raina Viera, who reports witnessing a murder. When Morgan and Karadec arrive at her home, Raina denies making the call. Despite their suspicions, they have no choice but to leave. Tragically, Raina is found dead the very next day at the base of her stairs.

The investigation takes a turn when Morgan and Karadec discover Raina was suffering from early-onset dementia. They find an old cell phone in her basement, confirming she did make the 911 call, but likely did not remember it. The key piece of evidence is a bloodstained vintage dress, which triggers the realization that Raina witnessed a murder from the past, not the present.

Connecting Two Murders Across Time

Morgan uses her unique skills to analyze the dress, narrowing down the timeline of the original crime. She determines the dress was made between 1998 and 2000. This leads the team to the cold case of Greta St. John, an up-and-coming singer who was shot and killed on New Year’s Eve 2000 outside The Black Jewel nightclub.

The investigation reveals that Greta and Raina were both singers at the club and shared the same manager, the dangerous Mac Epps. Morgan deduces that Greta and Epps were in a relationship and that Greta had hidden her pregnancy from him. When Epps learned about their child, he murdered Greta. Raina witnessed the crime, which is how her dress became stained with blood, and Epps bought her silence by providing her a home.

When the police move to arrest Epps, he takes a hostage and is fatally shot by Karadec. However, evidence later proves Epps was in a federal prison the day Raina died, meaning he did not kill her.

A Daughter’s Tragic Revenge

The team discovers that Greta’s daughter, Lucy, was the one who confronted Raina. Lucy had sought out Raina to learn more about her mother’s death. During a heated argument, and with Raina’s dementia causing confusion, Lucy accidentally pushed her, resulting in her fatal fall. Karadec subsequently arrests Lucy for Raina’s death.

Soto’s Professional Disappointment

A parallel storyline in the episode involves Lieutenant Selena Soto. After being passed over for a promotion to captain, she tries to maintain a strong front for her team. The position was given to a white man from another squad. In a private moment, Morgan encourages Soto to be honest about her feelings.

Judy Reyes, who plays Soto, shared in an interview, “It’s really hard, isn’t it? And then she has to put up with all that comes with this new person, this individual who is so attracted to what she’s built that he just wants to inject himself into it.”

Soto confesses she is angry and believes she deserved the promotion, hinting that systemic bias may have played a role in the decision.

Deepening Partnerships and a New Boss

The episode also highlighted the growing partnership between Morgan and Karadec. In a vulnerable moment, Karadec opens up about the weight of having shot someone for the first time. Morgan, in turn, admits she is not used to having someone look out for her, acknowledging that he was right to keep her away from the dangerous raid on Epps.

The final scene introduces the new captain, Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey. He meets Morgan in an elevator, revealing that he knows who she is and that he is their new boss. His charming yet mysterious demeanor suggests a new dynamic for the team moving forward.

While the hunt for Morgan’s missing ex, Roman, was not a major focus, Morgan is seen looking into the landscaping company of Arthur, the man who claimed Roman sent him.
