The song “Golden” by the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X has made history by reaching No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart. This marks the first time a K-pop song has topped the chart in 13 years, since PSY’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012. The track is part of the soundtrack for Netflix’s animated film “KPop Demon Hunters”, which has become a global sensation.

“Golden” climbed from No. 4 to the top spot in its sixth week on the chart. The song is performed by real-life artists EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, who voice the animated members of HUNTR/X in the movie. The film follows a K-pop girl group who secretly fight demons while balancing their idol careers.

How “Golden” Rose to the Top

The song’s success comes after a steady rise on the UK charts. It debuted at No. 93, then jumped to No. 4 before finally hitting No. 1. The track has also performed well globally, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and No. 1 in South Korea’s Melon Top 100.

Martin Talbot, CEO of Official Charts, said: “It’s 13 years since PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ became the first K-pop Number 1 in the UK, but this week represents another landmark moment for the globally dominating South Korean genre.”

The song’s catchy melody, blending Korean and English lyrics, has resonated with listeners. Lines like “forever unbreakable” have become fan favorites. The track was co-written by EJAE, a former SM Entertainment trainee, and produced by Teddy and 24 from The Black Label, known for their work with BLACKPINK.

Other K-Pop Hits on the UK Charts

While BTS and BLACKPINK have come close, no K-pop act had reached No. 1 in the UK since PSY. BTS’s “Dynamite” and “Butter” peaked at No. 3, while BLACKPINK’s Rosé hit No. 2 with “APT.” earlier this year.

Two other songs from “KPop Demon Hunters” also made the Top 20:

  • “Your Idol” by Saja Boys at No. 10
  • “Soda Pop” at No. 11

Why This Success Matters

The UK has been slower than the US to embrace K-pop, making “Golden” a breakthrough. The song’s placement in a Netflix film helped introduce K-pop to a wider audience.

Ejae, who co-wrote and sings on the track, shared: “It’s like I’m surfing for the first time and a big wave just came through. And I’m trying my best to get through it.”

Fans have celebrated the achievement online, calling it a “new era for K-pop” in Europe. The last animated film song to top the UK charts was “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Disney’s “Encanto” in 2022.

Global Impact of “Golden”

Beyond the UK, the song has dominated charts in:

  • Australia (No. 1)
  • New Zealand (No. 1)
  • Singapore (No. 1)
  • Malaysia (No. 1)

A remix by David Guetta was released on July 25, further boosting its popularity. The song has been streamed over 98 million times worldwide in just one week.

What’s Next for HUNTR/X?

With the film still trending on Netflix, the soundtrack’s success may continue. Republic Records has submitted “Golden” for awards consideration, and more remixes could be on the way.
