The song “Golden” by the fictional K-pop group HUNTR/X has made history by reaching No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart. This marks the first time a K-pop song has topped the chart in 13 years, since PSY’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012. The track is part of the soundtrack for Netflixโ€™s animated film “KPop Demon Hunters”, which has become a global sensation.

“Golden” climbed from No. 4 to the top spot in its sixth week on the chart. The song is performed by real-life artists EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, who voice the animated members of HUNTR/X in the movie. The film follows a K-pop girl group who secretly fight demons while balancing their idol careers.

How “Golden” Rose to the Top

The songโ€™s success comes after a steady rise on the UK charts. It debuted at No. 93, then jumped to No. 4 before finally hitting No. 1. The track has also performed well globally, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and No. 1 in South Koreaโ€™s Melon Top 100.

Martin Talbot, CEO of Official Charts, said: “Itโ€™s 13 years since PSYโ€™s ‘Gangnam Style’ became the first K-pop Number 1 in the UK, but this week represents another landmark moment for the globally dominating South Korean genre.”

The songโ€™s catchy melody, blending Korean and English lyrics, has resonated with listeners. Lines like “forever unbreakable” have become fan favorites. The track was co-written by EJAE, a former SM Entertainment trainee, and produced by Teddy and 24 from The Black Label, known for their work with BLACKPINK.

Other K-Pop Hits on the UK Charts

While BTS and BLACKPINK have come close, no K-pop act had reached No. 1 in the UK since PSY. BTSโ€™s “Dynamite” and “Butter” peaked at No. 3, while BLACKPINKโ€™s Rosรฉ hit No. 2 with “APT.” earlier this year.

Two other songs from “KPop Demon Hunters” also made the Top 20:

  • “Your Idol” by Saja Boys at No. 10
  • “Soda Pop” at No. 11

Why This Success Matters

The UK has been slower than the US to embrace K-pop, making “Golden” a breakthrough. The songโ€™s placement in a Netflix film helped introduce K-pop to a wider audience.

Ejae, who co-wrote and sings on the track, shared: “It’s like I’m surfing for the first time and a big wave just came through. And I’m trying my best to get through it.”

Fans have celebrated the achievement online, calling it a “new era for K-pop” in Europe. The last animated film song to top the UK charts was “We Donโ€™t Talk About Bruno” from Disneyโ€™s “Encanto” in 2022.

Global Impact of “Golden”

Beyond the UK, the song has dominated charts in:

  • Australia (No. 1)
  • New Zealand (No. 1)
  • Singapore (No. 1)
  • Malaysia (No. 1)

A remix by David Guetta was released on July 25, further boosting its popularity. The song has been streamed over 98 million times worldwide in just one week.

Whatโ€™s Next for HUNTR/X?

With the film still trending on Netflix, the soundtrackโ€™s success may continue. Republic Records has submitted “Golden” for awards consideration, and more remixes could be on the way.
