In the seventh episode of I Love LA, titled Divas Down, Maia Simsbury’s relentless drive finally pushes her client, Tallulah, into a career-changing opportunity. The cost of this victory, however, is devastating. By the episode’s end, Maia is fired from her job and her relationship with boyfriend Dylan collapses, leaving her professional and personal life in ruins.

The central plot revolves around Maia’s desperate effort to secure a meeting for Tallulah with Antoine, a powerful and eccentric fashion kingmaker organizing the exclusive Formé dinner during New York Fashion Week. Maia sees this as the breakthrough that will change both their lives. Her boss, Alyssa, however, is promoting a different client for the same spot and actively works to sabotage Maia’s plans.

A Chaotic Injury Sets the Stage for Disaster

The episode’s frantic energy begins with a shocking accident. While frantically opening boxes of promotional products for Tallulah at their friend Alani’s apartment, Maia loses control of a large kitchen knife. It flies into the air and plunges straight through her shoe and into her foot, pinning her to the floor. This graphic injury becomes a symbol of the physical toll of her ambition.

Rather than prioritize her health, Maia treats the injury as another obstacle to manage. She bandages the wound and, with Tallulah, heads to the nearest hospital, determined to still make the meeting with Antoine. In the emergency room, she learns from Alyssa that Antoine has cancelled. Refusing to accept defeat, Maia uses her connections to find out where Antoine is dining that night.

“Fuck the toe,” Maia declares after a doctor warns that leaving could lead to a serious infection. She limps out of the hospital against medical advice to chase the opportunity.

A High-Stakes Confrontation and a Costly Victory

Maia and Tallulah arrive at the restaurant, dressed for success, only to find Alyssa already there, having taken over the meeting. In a bold and desperate move, Maia interrupts and literally puts her injured, bleeding foot on the table next to Antoine’s drink to prove her commitment. The spectacle works.

Antoine, charmed by the audacity, is thrilled. He turns to Alyssa and says, “Your little nesting doll is insane… and I love it.” He immediately invites Tallulah to the Formé dinner and to a private gathering, effectively handing Maia the win.

With Tallulah whisked away, Maia is left alone with a furious Alyssa. The confrontation is not about Tallulah’s success, but about loyalty and control. Alyssa fires Maia on the spot, stating that her protégé’s insubordination and single-minded focus on her own client, at the company’s expense, makes her impossible to manage.

“You’re in such a hurry for more, you don’t realize what’s in front of you,” Alyssa tells her, framing the dismissal as a necessary lesson.

The Final Straw for Dylan

Exhausted and in pain, Maia returns home expecting comfort from her boyfriend, Dylan. She has completely forgotten they had plans for dinner with his parents that night. Dylan, who has been increasingly sidelined, reaches his breaking point. He confronts Maia about her constant neglect, pointing out she didn’t even call him from the hospital.

The ensuing fight lays bare the fundamental rift between them. Maia defends her ambition, sobbing, “I want a big life. I thought you loved that about me.” Dylan’s response captures his feeling of erasure: “The bigger your life is getting, the smaller I’m getting.” He tells her they need to take a break, ending the relationship.

Tallulah’s Reluctance and the Roots of Tension

A key element of the episode is Tallulah’s hesitation. Unlike Maia, she is not driven by the same hunger for fame. She is still embarrassed by a cheesy commercial she did for Ritz crackers, which she and the public considered a “flop”. Newly immersed in a comfortable relationship with her girlfriend, Tessa, Tallulah is content to pull back from the spotlight, which frustrates Maia.

During their time in the hospital, their conflicting perspectives erupt. Tallulah wants Maia to admit the Ritz ad was a mistake and to slow down. Maia finally concedes just to get Tallulah back on board, revealing the growing manipulation in their friendship. The episode highlights that Tallulah’s success is more important to Maia than it is to Tallulah herself.

A Pivotal Episode for the Series

Divas Down is widely seen as a turning point for I Love LA, moving the show into more dramatic territory. The episode strips Maia of the supporting structures in her life just as she achieves a major career goal for her client. It leaves her character at a crossroads: propelled forward professionally by her win but utterly alone.

The episode also featured a notable side story where pop star Mimi Rush, played by Ayo Edebiri, rehires the stylist Charlie after firing him, offering a small comic relief in an otherwise intense chapter.

I Love LA is streaming on HBO Max. The season one finale is scheduled to air on December 21, 2025.
