Fans of Law & Order: SVU have noticed less of Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola in the current season, and Ice-T has confirmed it’s due to a practical decision behind the scenes. The actor revealed that budget constraints are the primary reason for his reduced screen time, a move directly tied to the full-time return of a former cast member.
The Reason Behind the Reduced Role
In a recent interview, Ice-T explained the situation clearly. The return of actress Kelli Giddish as Detective Amanda Rollins, a move supported by the show and its stars, meant the production had to make financial adjustments.
โItโs just basically business,โ Ice-T stated. โThey brought Kelli back. At the end of the day, they couldnโt keep both of us on both times, as far as budget-wise.โ
He shared that the show’s producers were straightforward with him about the plan for Season 27, telling him, “Ice, weโll have you come in and out this year.” Ice-T expressed his complete understanding of the decision, emphasizing his long-standing positive relationship with the show.
Not Leaving the Show
Ice-T was quick to reassure fans that he is not leaving the long-running series. His main concern isn’t about this season but about the show’s future. He is more focused on the show being renewed for Season 28.
He even asked the producers if the reduced role meant he was being phased out, to which they firmly replied, “No way. We canโt imagine โLaw and Orderโ without you.” Having been on the show for 27 years, Ice-T has no negative feelings, stating the show has “taken care of me for so long.”
So far, Ice-T has appeared in only four out of the eight episodes that have aired this season. He assured viewers that Fin Tutuola will be “sprinkled throughout this season,” and his presence will even out over the course of the full 22-episode run.

Fan Reaction and Future Plans
The noticeable absence of the veteran character has not gone unnoticed by the show’s dedicated audience. Ice-T is actually pleased that fans have been upset about seeing less of him.
โI am kind of glad the fans are upset. What if I was missing and nobody cared?โ he joked.
The extra free time has given him the opportunity to focus on other projects, including working on new music. He remains a loyal part of the SVU family and is looking forward to the season’s upcoming episodes.
