AMC’s acclaimed series Interview With The Vampire returned for its second season with a significant change. Delainey Hayles took over the pivotal role of Claudia, the teenage vampire, from the original actress, Bailey Bass. Both the network and the actress confirmed the recasting, citing vague “unforeseen circumstances,” but deeper context points to scheduling conflicts with a major film franchise as the likely reason for the switch.

The change was announced just as production for the new season was set to begin in Prague, Paris, and New Orleans. The new season, which began airing on May 12, 2024, and recently became available on Netflix, introduces a more mature Claudia navigating the dangerous world of a Parisian vampire theater.

Official Statements on the Recasting

The production studio AMC and Bailey Bass herself released brief, similarly worded statements confirming the actress would not return. Neither provided specific details.

The AMC spokesperson stated:

“Bailey Bass is a talented actor who did a remarkable job bringing the character of Claudia to lifeโ€ฆ For a variety of reasons, Delainey Hayles will appear as Claudia in season two.”

Bass shared her own statement, saying:

“Due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances Iโ€™m unable to return to Anne Riceโ€™s โ€˜Interview with the Vampireโ€™ for the second seasonโ€ฆ I wish Delainey the best of luck in taking over.”

The Leading Theory: Clash with ‘Avatar’ Franchise

While the official reason remains unspecified, entertainment reports widely point to scheduling conflicts as the primary cause. At the time of Season 2’s production, Bailey Bass was committed to the Avatar film franchise. She played the role of Tsireya in Avatar: The Way of Water and was expected to reprise her role in the upcoming sequels.

James Cameron’s Avatar films are known for their lengthy, complex production schedules, often involving extensive location shoots. These commitments likely overlapped directly with the filming window for Interview With The Vampire’s second season, forcing Bass to choose between the two projects. Industry sources suggest the scale and priority of the Avatar franchise made it the likely choice.

The recasting process for Claudia was notably fast. Delainey Hayles revealed in interviews that her audition was rapid; she sent a tape, received a callback the next day, and was offered the role immediately after. She had to fly to Prague to begin work almost at once, indicating the production was on a tight schedule and needed to fill the role without delay.

Delainey Hayles Steps Into the Role

Delainey Hayles, whose previous credits include West End theater and British television, spoke about the challenge and opportunity of joining an established series.

She told TVLine:

“I was so excited [to join the show], but I was also nervous, because I know that recasts are very hard.”

To prepare, Hayles deeply immersed herself in the source material. She said Anne Rice’s original novels became “like my Bible,” and she constantly referenced them to understand Claudia’s core character. She also rewatched the first season of the series multiple times to study the dynamics.

Executive producer Mark Johnson commented on the transition, acknowledging the situation while praising the new actress. He said, “For a variety of reasons, Bailey was not able to be with usโ€ฆ Yes, of course sheโ€™s the same Claudia, but she has matured and Delaineyโ€™s performance is just extraordinary, so our bad luck was our good luck”.

A New Chapter for Claudia in Season 2

The narrative of the show itself helped facilitate the actor change. Season 2 begins with a four-year time jump. The story finds Claudia and Louis in Europe, having fled New Orleans after their confrontation with Lestat. They are now older, wiser, and on a quest to find other vampires, which leads them to the mysterious Thรฉรขtre des Vampires in 1940s Paris.

Hayles explained that this time jump allowed her to portray an evolved version of the character. She described her Claudia as having “more life experience” and noted that after years of traveling alone with Louis, Claudia has “a bit more Louis to her”. This narrative shift from a volatile young vampire to a more seasoned and determined character provided a natural story reason for a change in the actress’s portrayal.

Fan Reactions to the New Claudia

The recast inevitably led to comparisons between the two performances. Some fans on platforms like Reddit expressed initial difficulty adjusting, noting differences in the actresses’ interpretations.

One fan observed that Bass’s performance in Season 1 “embodied the angst and derangement” of Claudia, with a palpable sense of hatred and emotion. They felt Hayles brought a “quiet stoic and more calm interpretation,” which made the character feel more adult.

However, other viewers embraced the change, seeing it as fitting for the character’s journey. Another fan commented, “Bailey portrayed the trapped daughter of chaotic vampires coming into her own. Delainey is older, wiser, determined and self assured”. Many agreed that the shift in performance style aligned well with Claudia’s growth over the intervening years and her new circumstances in Europe.

The series has continued to perform strongly with critics and audiences following the recast. Season 2 concluded its eight-episode run on June 30, 2024, and the show was officially renewed for a third season in June 2024. The third season is slated to return in 2026 and will adapt the next book in Anne Rice’s series, The Vampire Lestat.
