The hit Amazon Prime Video animated series Invincible has kept fans on edge with its bloody action and emotional storytelling. While the show has mostly followed the path of the popular comic books, the creator is now making it clear that Season 4 will take some fresh turns. Robert Kirkman, who wrote the original comics and works on the TV show, recently shared that viewers can expect new material that was never part of the source material.
The show has already made some changes from the comics. Events have shifted around, and characters like Debbie Grayson and Donald have gotten deeper stories. But Kirkman says this approach will continue in a big way when the new season arrives in March 2026.
A Brand New Storyline Coming in Season 4 Episode 4
Kirkman revealed during New York Comic Con 2025 that he personally wrote the fourth episode of the upcoming season. This episode will feature a completely original story not found in the Invincible comics. The post-credits scene from the Season 3 finale set this up, showing detective Damien Darkblood in hell talking to a mysterious demon voiced by horror icon Bruce Campbell.
“It was a very special episode to me because it represents a new story that isn’t from the comics, and so I wanted to tackle that.” – Robert Kirkman
Kirkman described this episode as a “big sidestep” from what fans normally expect from Invincible. The storyline appears to involve Mark Grayson possibly facing off against demonic forces, something the original comics never explored. Kirkman noted that most superhero stories eventually have a moment where the hero travels to hell, but he never got the chance to include that in the comics until now.
Why Kirkman Is Adding New Elements to the Show
Unlike his work on The Walking Dead, where he often pushed to change things because he was bored with the source material, Kirkman is taking a different approach with Invincible. He explained that he now follows a simple rule: if it is not broken, do not fix it. His main goal is to expand scenes and make them better rather than completely rewriting the story.
“We may weave some new things here and there. There might be a few bits in season four that are not from the comic that I’m very excited about, but for the most part, a lot of the big stuff that you guys are fans of the comics, that you’re really dying to get into the show, they’re going to get into the show.” – Robert Kirkman
Kirkman learned this lesson from his time on The Walking Dead. He admitted that his familiarity with his own work sometimes made him bored, leading him to want major changes. Now he understands there is value in staying true to what made the story work in the first place.
More Conquest and New Villains on the Way
Fans can expect to see more of the brutal Viltrumite Conquest in Season 4. Kirkman teased that the show will include scenes with Conquest that he could not put in the comics. The character made a terrifying entrance in the Season 3 finale, and it looks like the show will expand his role beyond what readers experienced in the original books.
Matthew Rhys, known for his role in The Americans, will voice Dinosaurus, another major villain coming in Season 4. Lee Pace has also been confirmed to voice Thragg, the true ruler of the Viltrumite Empire and the main villain of the entire Invincible saga. Kirkman shared that all of Thragg’s voice recording is already complete.
Release Information for Invincible Season 4
Invincible Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in March 2026. The show has already completed voice recording for Season 5 as well, with the team working on two seasons at once to maintain a yearly release schedule. Kirkman joked that Season 5 might come out in 2032, but the production timeline suggests fans will not have to wait that long.
For viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions, the show will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The service typically releases new episodes weekly for the season’s duration.

Animation Quality and Future Plans
Kirkman addressed concerns about the show’s animation, promising it will keep getting better. He explained that as the overseas animation studios work more with the production team, they get a better understanding of what the show needs. The Conquest fight in Season 3 showed where the series is heading, and Kirkman hopes to reach those heights more often in future episodes.
As for how long the show will run, Kirkman estimated that seven to nine seasons would be needed to fully adapt the entire comic book story. With Amazon’s support and the show’s growing popularity, he remains hopeful about reaching that goal.
