The long-standing fan debate over who would win in a fight between three of comics’ most powerful beings has an official answer from the one person who created one of them. Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, has definitively weighed in on the hypothetical battle between Superman, Omni-Man, and Homelander. His verdict leaves little room for doubt about where his loyalties lie.
Kirkman’s Official Verdict
At New York Comic-Con, Robert Kirkman was asked to settle the popular argument. He declared Omni-Man the clear winner, offering a blunt assessment of the other two contenders. He dismissed Homelander as a relatively weak figure due to the more grounded nature of his world in The Boys. His criticism for Superman, however, was even more direct.
“Well, Homelander is a weaklingโฆ But Superman sucks. Omni-Man takes him down easily. I’ve said this before. Every time I say it, a bunch of Superman fansโฆ come out of the woodwork and attack me online as if I said something that’s not definitively and indisputably true. But Omni-Man would completely trash that guy.”
Kirkman has reiterated this position in other interviews, joking that he often ends up making Superman fans angry online. He maintains that despite Superman’s legendary feats of strength, such as moving planets, Omni-Man would still emerge victorious. He even suggested that the upcoming Season 4 of Invincible, premiering in March 2026, might showcase power levels for Omni-Man that could rival Superman’s most impressive displays.
Breaking Down the Power Levels
The reasoning behind Kirkman’s pick becomes clear when comparing the abilities and accomplishments of the three characters.
Homelander, while the most powerful being in his universe, operates on a much lower scale. His strength and durability are formidable against humans and other Compound V-powered “Supes,” but he has been shown to be vulnerable. He was overpowered in a fight against Billy Butcher and Soldier Boy, who managed to give him a bloody nose. His powers are also limited in application, as he claimed he could not save a falling plane because he needed a solid surface to push against. His greatest weakness, however, is his psychological instability and his complete lack of experience against a truly equal opponent.
Omni-Man, in contrast, is a battle-hardened warrior from the Viltrumite empire with thousands of years of combat experience. His feats of strength are planetary in scale. He famously flew across galaxies in just a week, punched a hole through a planet, and single-handedly deflected a meteor the size of Texas. In a brutal display of his power, he systematically eradicated the entire Flaxan civilization by flying through their world so fast that he ignited the atmosphere with his body. Viltrumites also possess a powerful healing factor, allowing them to survive injuries that would be fatal to others.
Even Other Creators Agree
The consensus that Omni-Man would defeat Homelander isn’t held by Kirkman alone. He has revealed that he discussed the matchup with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, executive producers of The Boys television series. According to Kirkman, they conceded that Homelander is “significantly less powerful than Omni-Man” and that the Viltrumite would easily win a fight. This agreement from the creators behind Homelander’s own show adds significant weight to the argument.
A detailed analysis from the YouTube series DEATH BATTLE! visually demonstrated how a confrontation might go. In their episode, Omni-Man is shown completely unfazed by Homelander’s heat vision and sonic screams. After a short and brutal exchange, Omni-Man emerges victorious in a gruesome fashion, ripping out Homelander’s heart and crushing his head. The episode’s calculations concluded that Omni-Man’s power is billions of times greater than Homelander’s.
Despite his strong opinions on the Man of Steel, Kirkman is a fan of the character’s latest cinematic outing, calling James Gunn’s Superman movie “excellent.”
