What Happens in Episode 3
Episode 3, “Now You See It,” continues the story set in 1962. The plot follows multiple groups as the strange events in Derry intensify. Military leaders, including General Shaw, push forward with a top-secret mission. He orders Major Leroy Hanlon and Captain Pauly Russo to escort Dick Hallorann on an aerial search for a new dig site. Hallorann, a character familiar to fans of Stephen King’s “The Shining,” is haunted by visions during this mission, including a carnival barker and the glowing eyes of Pennywise.
Meanwhile, the civilian story also develops. After a major discovery yields few answers, a character named Rose attends a tribal meeting concerning the military’s growing presence in Derry. The kidsโRonnie, Lilly, Will, and Richโtake action to try and get visual proof of the evil they are facing by attempting to conjure an Orixรก, a spirit from Afro-Brazilian religion.
The episode also deals with the fallout from the first two episodes. Hank Grogan, Ronnie’s father, has been arrested and is threatened with being sent to Shawshank State Prison, a direct reference to another of Stephen King’s famous works. This connection excites fans of the author’s shared universe.
The People in Front of the Camera
The series features a mix of new characters and familiar faces from Stephen King’s universe. The main cast includes:
- Jovan Adepo as Major Leroy Hanlon
- Taylour Paige as his wife, Ruth Hanlon
- Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann
- James Remar as a town historian
- Stephen Rider as Hank Grogan
- Bill Skarsgรฅrd as Pennywise the Clown
- Madeleine Stowe
- Rudy Mancuso
The younger cast includes Clara Stack as Lilly, Amanda Christine as Ronnie, and Blake Cameron James as Will Hanlon, the father of Mike Hanlon from the original “IT” story.
A Deeper Look at the Stephen King Universe
“Welcome to Derry” is expanding the world established in Stephen King’s novel and the subsequent films. The appearance of Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann directly links the series to “The Shining,” as Hallorann is the psychic cook from that story. His involvement suggests a deeper exploration of the “shining” ability within the town of Derry.
The mention of Shawshank Prison in the context of Hank Grogan’s arrest is another significant nod. The prison is the central setting of King’s “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” which was adapted into a beloved film. This reference further ties “Welcome to Derry” into the larger tapestry of King’s fictional Maine.
Series director Andy Muschietti explained the long-term plan for the show, stating that it is designed to run for three seasons. He revealed that a second season would be set in 1935, going further back in time to explore another cycle of Pennywise’s terror.
The series is developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, with Andy Muschietti directing several episodes, including the pilot.
