The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry concluded, but its ending strongly suggested the story is far from over. The finale not only wrapped up the 1962 battle with Pennywise but also introduced a major twist that paves the way for more seasons. This twist involves Pennywise’s unique perception of time and a direct threat to the future Losers’ Club.
Creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti have a clear plan for the show, envisioning a three-season story. The season one finale was even given a title card calling it “Chapter One,” mirroring the ending of the first IT film and signaling the start of a larger saga. While HBO has not officially announced a second season, the creative groundwork is firmly in place.
How the Finale Sets Up Future Seasons
The most significant setup for future stories comes from a chilling conversation between Pennywise and Marge Truman. During their confrontation, the clown reveals he experiences time in a nonlinear way. To him, the past, present, and future all exist at once. He knows Marge will one day become Margaret Tozier and give birth to a son named Richie.
“The seed of your stinking loins and his friends bring me my death. Or is it birth?” Pennywise says to Marge, showing clear awareness of his eventual defeat at the hands of Richie and the Losers’ Club.
This revelation changes everything. It suggests Pennywise awoke in 1962 with a specific goal: to kill the future parents of his enemies and prevent his own demise. After the battle, Marge shares her fear with her friend Lily, wondering if the creature could travel further back in time to target their ancestors. Lily’s response hints directly at the show’s potential structure: “I guess it’ll be someone else’s fight”. This line perfectly sets the stage for stories set in earlier eras, following different groups of heroes.
The Planned Journey Back in Time
The creators’ roadmap for the series involves moving backward through Derry’s dark history with each new season. Season one covered the events surrounding the Black Spot fire in 1962.
If the series continues, the plan is for season two to jump back 27 years to 1935. This period in Derry’s history includes the Bradley Gang massacre, a major tragic event referenced in Stephen King’s novel. A potential third season would go back another 27 years to 1908, which would explore the Kitchener Ironworks explosion. These are all catastrophes that Mike Hanlon researches in the original story, marking the ends of Pennywise’s previous feeding cycles.
Key Character Links to the IT Universe
The finale solidified several characters’ places in the wider Stephen King universe, creating important bridges to the familiar stories.
Marge Truman’s Legacy: The confirmation that Marge is Richie Tozier’s mother was a key reveal. It also gives emotional depth to Richie’s name, as Marge is expected to name her son after Rich Santos, her friend who sacrificed himself to save her in the Black Spot fire.
The Hanlon Family’s Destiny: In the finale’s closing scenes, Rose asks Leroy and Charlotte Hanlon to stay in Derry, take over her farm, and join the watch over the town. Their decision to stay establishes the family’s lifelong commitment to guarding against Pennywise’s return. This directly sets up the future role of their grandson, Mike Hanlon, who becomes the historian and lookout for the Losers’ Club.
Dick Hallorann’s Next Chapter: After helping defeat Pennywise, Dick Hallorann finds some peace and decides to leave the military. He tells Leroy Hanlon he’s accepted a job as a cook at a hotel. His final, ironic line, “How much trouble can a hotel be?” is a direct nod to his future at the terrifying Overlook Hotel in The Shining.

A Final Scene Connecting to Beverly Marsh
The finale included a post-credits scene that connects directly to the 2017 and 2019 films. It flashes forward to October 1988 inside the Juniper Hill asylum. An elderly Ingrid Kersh encounters a young girl who has just witnessed her mother’s death. That girl is Beverly Marsh, played again by Sophia Lillis.
Mrs. Kersh tells the grieving Beverly, “No one who dies in Derry ever really dies”. This is the same line an older Mrs. Kersh later says to an adult Beverly (Jessica Chastain) in IT: Chapter Two, just before transforming into Pennywise. This scene tightly links the prequel series to the events of the films.
