IU‘s agency, EDAM Entertainment, has escalated its efforts to combat online harassment by filing legal complaints against 180 individuals. The agency’s recent statement highlights the severity of the incidents, including defamation, threats, and privacy violations targeting the renowned singer.
Agency Statement on Legal Actions
On November 11, 2024 (KST), EDAM Entertainment issued a detailed statement outlining their steps to protect IU. The complaints address various serious offenses:
- Threats against the artist.
- Defamation through false accusations and misinformation.
- Unfounded plagiarism allegations.
- Death threats and privacy violations.
- Creation and distribution of AI-generated deepfake content.
The agency disclosed that they are continually filing complaints and have already reported approximately 180 individuals for harassment.
Legal Outcomes and Recent Developments
Several of the cases have led to legal actions and penalties, including:
- Six cases of fines under summary prosecution.
- Three cases involving conditional suspensions of indictment with mandatory education.
- One case of conditional suspension with probation supervision.
In one instance, a defendant who defamed IU online and issued death threats was fined ₩3.00 million KRW (about $2,140 USD). The individual, however, has challenged the ruling and filed an appeal.
Former Classmate Implicated
EDAM Entertainment revealed a shocking detail in their statement, identifying one individual involved as IU’s former middle school classmate.
“Among them, there is one individual who is presumed to be a middle school classmate of IU. Despite the ongoing case, it has been found that they continue to harass IU. So, we are responding.”
The plagiarism allegations against IU, which sparked significant controversy last year, were strongly defended by her agency.
Espionage Accusation Case
In another related case, authorities identified a person who accused IU of espionage. Despite initially refusing multiple summonses, the suspect’s case has been forwarded to prosecution and is awaiting disposition.
EDAM’s Firm Stance Against Malicious Behavior
The agency reaffirmed their commitment to protecting IU, stating they will relentlessly pursue legal action against individuals posting malicious content.
