IU, one of South Korea’s most beloved singers and actresses, continues to face challenges from malicious online activities. Among the 180 individuals accused of slandering IU, a woman in her 30s recently pleaded for leniency during a court hearing.

Woman Claims Mental Illness Impacted Her Actions

The accused, identified as Kim (39), appeared at the Seoul Central District Court on November 27 for her sentencing hearing. Prosecutors have requested a four-month sentence for her defamatory comments about IU, which she posted on April 10, 2024, targeting IU’s singing abilities and outfits.

During the hearing, Kim defended her actions, stating:

“I was merely expressing my personal opinions.”

She also appealed for leniency, claiming:

“I have a mental health issue that impacts my writing skills.”

The court’s verdict for this case is scheduled for December 3.

  • Six cases have already resulted in fines through a summary indictment process.
  • Other cases led to conditional non-prosecution with mandatory educational courses or probationary guidance.
  • Overseas offenders are also under investigation, with help from relevant authorities.

Another Case Awaits Verdict on December 4

In a separate ongoing case, a former classmate of IU faces charges for prolonged online harassment. This case is set for its second hearing on December 4.

Fans Support IU Against Cyberbullying

IU’s fans have praised EDAM Entertainment’s proactive measures and have actively contributed by reporting malicious posts online. The agency emphasized its commitment to monitoring online platforms to protect IU from further harm.

As the legal battles unfold, IU’s fans remain steadfast in their support, ensuring a safer environment for their favorite artist.
