The 210th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Jang Won Young and Starship Entertainment last month, marking a significant win against malicious content on social media.
Strong Legal Stance Against Malicious YouTubers
Starship Entertainment has been actively pursuing legal action against YouTubers disseminating false content about their artists. In a statement released on July 25, 2023, the agency expressed their commitment to protecting their artists’ rights, standing firm against malicious slander, false information circulation, personal attacks, and defamatory posts. The agency has taken significant legal steps, including criminal and civil suits, an overseas lawsuit, and obtaining information from the United States District Court regarding the Sojang channel manager.
Sojang’s Impact on IVE and Legal Pursuits
Sojang’s consistent spread of false information has caused serious defamation against IVE’s members, impacting Starship Entertainment’s operations. Despite an apology, video deletions, and deactivation of the channel account, the agency is determined to pursue civil and criminal liability for Sojang’s past illegal actions through the ongoing lawsuit. Starship is actively verifying the personal information of “cyber wrecker” channels, including Sojang, with plans to hold them accountable for their actions.
Starship Entertainment has updated fans on the legal proceedings, revealing that criminal charges against Sojang have been forwarded from the police to the prosecution. The agency awaits a stern judgment from the law, and two civil lawsuits are in progress. IVE’s Jang Won Young’s individual lawsuit has been won through a deemed confession, with the court ordering Sojang to pay damages of 100 million KRW.
