James Gunn, director of the new Superman movie, says the film is doing well in the U.S. but facing challenges overseas due to anti-American sentiment. The movie has earned $235 million domestically but only $171 million internationally after two weekends. Gunn thinks global politics and Superman’s strong ties to American identity may be affecting its performance in some countries.

Superman’s Strong U.S. Box Office vs. International Struggles

The new Superman film had a $125 million opening weekend in the U.S., making it the third-biggest debut of 2025. However, its international opening was lower at $95 million. While the movie is still growing worldwide, Gunn admits it’s not as popular in some regions as other superheroes like Batman.

“Superman is not a known commodity in some places. He is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things. And it also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us.”James Gunn

Despite this, the film is doing well in Brazil and the U.K., where audiences are responding positively. Gunn remains optimistic, saying word-of-mouth could help it grow in other markets.

Controversy Over Superman Being Called “Woke”

Before the movie’s release, some conservative critics labeled it “SuperWoke” after Gunn described Superman as an immigrant story. He told The Sunday Times that Superman represents American values and kindness, which sparked backlash from right-wing commentators.

“I’ve heard people say it was woke, and then I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s not. I am curious as to what in the movie is considered woke.”James Gunn

Gunn clarified that his focus was on kindness as a core theme, not politics. His brother, Sean Gunn, defended the film, saying:

“Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants. And if you don’t like that, you’re not American.”

Why Some Countries May Be Rejecting Superman

Gunn suggested that global attitudes toward the U.S. might be influencing the film’s performance. Recent political tensions, including trade policies and border control debates, have made some international audiences less enthusiastic about a symbol of American ideals.

“The way we are perceived globally is we are blowing up not just our economy but everyone else’s economy. People don’t think it’s good, they don’t think it’s fair, so why would they go to America?”Jackie Filla, Hotel Association of Los Angeles

However, not everyone agrees with Gunn’s explanation. Some fans argue that Superman is one of the most recognizable characters in the world, and his logo is universally known.

“Everyone everywhere knows who Superman is. His logo is probably the most recognized worldwide, and nobody was making these excuses for Captain America.”Fan comment on Facebook

Warner Bros. Stays Silent as Superman’s Future Hangs in the Balance

Warner Bros. has not commented on the box office differences. The studio is likely watching closely, as Superman is the first film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Future projects like Supergirl and Peacemaker Season 2 depend on its success.

Gunn downplayed reports that the movie needs $700 million to break even, calling those numbers “complete and utter nonsense.” Still, the pressure is on, as a flop could impact the entire DC reboot plan.

Fan Reactions Are Mixed

Some fans support Gunn’s view that anti-American feelings could be a factor, while others think the movie just isn’t connecting with international audiences the same way.

“I mean, it makes sense to me international audiences right now might feel apprehensive about a superhero they feel is tied to America’s image.”Fan comment on Facebook

Others mocked the idea that Superman isn’t well-known enough, with one fan saying:

“Imagine saying in all seriousness that Superman is doing poorly because he isn’t well-known enough.”

What’s Next for Superman at the Box Office?

The film’s worldwide total is currently $406 million, with strong weekday numbers suggesting it could still grow. Gunn remains hopeful, calling the movie “a total win” so far.

“This is just the seed of the tree that Peter and I have been watering for the past three years. So to be able to have it start off so positively has been incredibly overwhelming.”James Gunn

Whether international audiences warm up to Superman or not, the film’s domestic success proves that American viewers still believe in the Man of Steel.
