Jason Momoa has shaved his beard for the first time in six years to get ready for his role in Dune: Part Three. The actor shared a video of the transformation on social media, saying he did it only for director Denis Villeneuve. Momoa last shaved for the first Dune movie in 2021.
The video shows Momoa using an electric shaver to remove his beard. He laughs as he sees his clean-shaven face and says,
“God damn it, I hate it! Only for you, Denis.”
Fans reacted strongly to his new look, with many saying they prefer his bearded appearance. Others praised him for his commitment to the role.
Why Jason Momoa Shaved His Beard
Momoa plays Duncan Idaho, a swordmaster and mentor to Timothรฉe Chalametโs character, Paul Atreides, in the Dune series. His character died in the first film but is returning for the third installment. In the original books by Frank Herbert, Duncan comes back as a clone.
The actor explained that he last shaved six years ago while filming the first Dune movie. At that time, he was also launching his eco-friendly water company, Mananalu, which aims to reduce plastic waste. In the shaving video, he promoted the brandโs new partnership with Boomerang Water, a company that reuses bottles to cut down on single-use plastic.
“I want to tell you guys and inform people that Mananalu, powered by Boomerang, is out there trying to make change,” he said.
Jason Momoaโs Son Joins the Dune Cast
Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, Jasonโs 16-year-old son, will also appear in Dune: Part Three. He will play Leto II, one of the twin children of Paul Atreides and Chani (Zendaya). Another young actor, Ida Brooke, will play his sister, Ghanima.
Momoa talked about his sonโs casting in an interview, saying,
“Heโs in for a rude awakening. Heโs into the workforce for the first time. Itโs going to be good. He did it on his own. I couldnโt do what heโs doing at his age. Thereโs no way I could sit in a room with Denis Villeneuve and hold my own. I was on Baywatch at 19. Heโs 16 and holding his own with Denis Villeneuve.”
What to Expect in Dune: Part Three
The third Dune movie is based on Frank Herbertโs 1969 novel, Dune Messiah. It continues the story of Paul Atreides as he deals with the consequences of becoming emperor. The film will bring back Timothรฉe Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh, along with new cast members like Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke.
Director Denis Villeneuve has said this will be his final Dune movie. He explained that the third film will feel different from the first two, which he saw as one complete story.
“Itโs important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. Thatโs done and thatโs finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, itโs not like a trilogy. Itโs strange to say that, but if I go back there, itโs to do something that feels different and has its own identity.”
Fan Reactions to Momoaโs New Look
Many fans commented on Momoaโs shaved face, with mixed reactions. Some loved the change, while others missed his beard. His girlfriend, Adria Arjona, left heart emojis under his post.
One fan wrote,
“You look handsome either way, I am a huge fan of the beard however!”
Another added,
“He is beautiful no matter what. Thanks for using your platform for good.”
