Jennifer Hudson recently opened up about her professional and personal dynamics with boyfriend Common after their collaboration on her new holiday track, “Almost Christmas.” Featured on her holiday album The Gift of Love, the song includes Common’s signature spoken-word poetry, a unique addition to the festive project.
Inspiration for the Collaboration
During her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on November 27, Hudson shared insights into how the collaboration came about. She explained,
“We’re both very musical. Two Chicagoans, and I was like, ‘Where’s the poetry and the storytelling in the holiday albums?’ And who better to do it than him?”
Hudson revealed that Common contributed spoken-word poetry to the track, an artistic choice that highlights the pair’s shared passion for storytelling through music.
Creative Challenges
Despite their strong chemistry as artists, Hudson acknowledged some challenges when working with Common, whose real name is Rashid. She described him as a “genius musician” but also noted his assertive personality.
“He’s a bit bossy when it comes to being Common,” Hudson joked, emphasizing the differences between Common’s musical persona and his real-life self. However, she maintained that collaborating with him was an “honor.”
Previous Musical Collaborations
Before this holiday project, the couple worked together on Common’s album, The Auditorium Vol. 1, released in July. One standout track from the album, A GOD (There Is), featured Hudson’s vocals. Common previously spoke about this collaboration, expressing admiration for Hudson’s contribution.
“I love that we were able to utilize her gifts in a new space. She brought it, man,” Common shared in an interview earlier this year.
He recalled that his musician friends were curious about the female voice on the track, and he was proud to reveal it was Hudson.
