Jennifer Lawrence recently explained her decision to work without an intimacy coordinator for intimate scenes with co-star Robert Pattinson in their new film “Die My Love”. The actress stated she felt completely safe with Pattinson, highlighting his professional behavior and strong relationship with his partner. Her comments have started a significant conversation about the use of intimacy coordinators in filmmaking.
The Reason Behind the Decision
While appearing on the Las Culturistas podcast, Jennifer Lawrence explained that she and Robert Pattinson chose not to use an intimacy coordinator for their sex scenes in the new psychological drama. The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay, features Lawrence as a woman struggling with postpartum psychosis.
Lawrence described a comfortable and professional environment on set. She stated that Pattinson’s respectful nature and the clear boundaries in their working relationship made her feel secure.
โI felt really safe with Rob. He is not pervy and very in love with Suki Waterhouse,โ Lawrence said. โWe mostly were just talking about our kids and relationships. There was never any weird, like, โDoes he think I like him?โโ
She further clarified that if there had been any discomfort, she would have requested a coordinator, noting that her past experiences with other male co-stars were not always positive.
โIf there was a little bit of that I would probably have an intimacy coordinator. A lot of male actors get offended if you donโt want to f*** them, and then the punishment starts. He was not like that.โ
Lawrence later clarified that her comment about “punishment” was something she had “heard of,” but not personally experienced .
What Is an Intimacy Coordinator?
Intimacy coordinators are professionals hired to ensure the safety and comfort of actors during scenes involving nudity or simulated sex. Their role includes facilitating communication between actors and directors, choreographing movements, and ensuring consent. The position became more standard in Hollywood following the #MeToo movement to help prevent harassment and abuse on set .
Despite their purpose, several well-known actors have recently expressed that they prefer to work without them. Lawrence’s rationale is similar to that of Jennifer Aniston, who said she declined a coordinator while working with Jon Hamm on “The Morning Show,” and Gwyneth Paltrow, who felt the role could be “stifling” for performers .
A Different Experience with Nudity
Lawrence’s role in “Die My Love” required nudity, which she filmed while pregnant with her second child. She shared that this experience was different from her previous work, such as in “No Hard Feelings,” where she felt pressure to diet and exercise extensively.
โI donโt care about nudity. Iโm not sensitive about it,โ Lawrence said at a screening for the film. โI wanted Lynne to have total freedom artistically.โ
She explained that being pregnant helped reduce her anxiety about her appearance. She even refused offers to digitally retouch cellulite in close-up shots, responding, โNo. Thatโs an a**โ .
The Public and Professional Reaction
Lawrence’s comments have sparked a mixed response online and in the industry. Some social media users and professionals feel her remarks overlook the importance of intimacy coordinators.
One person on social media argued, โItโs so that every person on set (including behind the camera) feels safe and protected. Seasoned actors need to stop acting like itโs a badge of honor to not have an intimacy coordinatorโ .
Former Channel 4 drama head Caroline Hollick has previously called similar comments from other stars “irresponsible,” noting that powerful, established actors might have a different experience than those just starting their careers .
However, others defend an actor’s right to choose based on their specific situation and comfort level with a co-star.
A Supportive Working Relationship
The trust between the two actors was built before filming began. Lawrence and Pattinson did interpretive dance lessons together, which she said helped with the choreography of both sex scenes and fighting scenes . Lawrence has also described Pattinson as a close friend, often sharing personal anecdotes about their time together off-set.
“Die My Love,” produced by Martin Scorsese, was released in theaters on November 7. Lawrence’s performance has already generated significant Oscar buzz for its raw and fearless portrayal of a mother’s mental health crisis .
