Jensen Ackles, known for his roles in Supernatural and The Boys, has addressed the widespread fan campaign to see him as Batman in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. While acknowledging the role as a tremendous honor, the actor expressed significant hesitation about stepping into the iconic cape and cowl.
The speculation around who will play Batman in the revamped DCU has been intense, with Ackles emerging as a popular fan choice. This enthusiasm stems from his current role as Soldier Boy in The Boys and his established history of voicing the Dark Knight in several DC animated films. Despite this background, the actor is conscious of the heavy legacy left by previous performers.
Ackles on the Pressure of Playing Batman
In a recent interview, Jensen Ackles openly discussed the possibility of taking on the part. He did not confirm any talks with DC Studios but shared his thoughtful perspective on what the part would require.
He admitted that the main challenge would be creating a version of the character that feels new and distinct. Ackles stated that he would rely on the creative team for guidance, saying he would need to “lean heavily on Gunn and whoeverโs directing and whoeverโs writing it, and get inspiration from the text.”
He also compared the responsibility to a high-stakes game, noting, “You talk about not wanting to fumble the football โ thatโs one that I would be nervous as hell to carry.” Despite the nerves, he recognized the achievement it would represent, calling it a “certain feather in the cap” and affirming that “anybody who gets to wear the cowl, they got something.” When told that fans are supporting him for the role, Ackles responded, “Iโll cross โem, too. Just say the word.”
James Gunn’s Vision for a Fresh Batman
DC Studios co-head James Gunn is well aware of the challenges in introducing another Batman, given the character’s long history and frequent appearances in media. He has publicly acknowledged that the sheer volume of Batman content can risk making the character “boring” and has emphasized the need for a clear reason to bring him into the DCU.
Gunn has confirmed he has found a “way in” for this new Batman. He has specifically stated he is “not interested in a funny, campy Batman,” signaling a commitment to the character’s darker tones. The new film, The Brave and the Bold, is expected to be a key part of this fresh approach. It will introduce Damian Wayne as Robin, Bruce Wayne’s son, focusing on Batman as a father and mentor. This will explore the dynamics of the Bat-Family in a way most live-action movies have not, moving beyond the lone vigilante portrayal.
The Road to The Brave and the Bold
Gunn has confirmed that the script for The Brave and the Bold is in active development, though many details are still in flux. The film will be directed by Andy Muschietti and is loosely based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run, which features a more heroic and superheroic Batman.
This version of Batman will exist separately from Robert Pattinson’s Batman, who will continue his own story in The Batman Part II. This allows the DCU to present a different take on the character, one that is more integrated into a world of metahumans and super-teams.
Casting for the DCU’s Dark Knight is one of the most watched decisions in Hollywood. Gunn has noted that a “lot of ‘big actors’” have expressed interest in the part, calling Batman “the one character everyone wants to play.” No official offers have been announced, leaving the door open for fan-favorite choices like Ackles.
