The upcoming DC Studios series centered on Jimmy Olsen is taking shape, and the creative team behind it just shared new information about what viewers can expect. Co-showrunner Dan Perrault recently spoke about the project at the SXSW festival, clearing up confusion about the title and explaining how the show will blend crime, mystery, and comedy elements.

The series brings back Skyler Gisondo as the Daily Planet photographer who became a fan favorite in James Gunn’s Superman movie from 2025. Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the duo known for creating the Netflix mockumentary series American Vandal, are running the show and writing the episodes.

What the Show Will Actually Be Called

One of the biggest questions surrounding the project has been its title. Early reports suggested the show would be called DC Crime, but Perrault confirmed that is not happening.

“It’s a different title that hasn’t been announced yet,” Perrault told The Direct. “We were tossing around some names last week. We really like, honestly, multiple of them, but all I can say is that it’s not called ‘Untitled Jimmy Olsen show.’”

James Gunn, who runs DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, had already shot down the DC Crime title earlier. Gunn clarified that no project with that name was ever in development, even as a working title. The team is still deciding on the final name, meaning fans will have to wait a bit longer to know what the series will officially be called.

A Crime Mystery Comedy Approach

Perrault also explained the tone and style of the series, confirming it will operate in what he calls the “crime mystery comedy” space. This is familiar ground for him and Yacenda, who built their careers on American Vandal, a show that mixed serious true-crime storytelling with sharp humor.

“It’s comfortable territory for Tony Yacenda and I. We’ve worked in this crime mystery comedy for a very long time. There’s definitely tools from that toolkit that we can apply here that I don’t think has been seen in the superhero genre thus far.”

The series will not follow the typical superhero format. Instead, it will be presented as a true-crime docuseries hosted by Jimmy Olsen himself. Rather than investigating regular crimes, Olsen will look into metahuman mysteries and cases involving super-powered villains. The show will explore how regular people and journalists deal with living in a world full of extraordinary beings.

Gorilla Grodd Takes Center Stage

The first season of the show will focus on one of DC’s most unusual villains. According to earlier reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Gorilla Grodd will be the main subject of the first season. Grodd is a super-intelligent gorilla with telepathic abilities who first appeared in DC comics in 1959. While he is traditionally known as a Flash villain, his strange and dangerous nature makes him a perfect fit for an investigative series.

The show will treat Grodd as more than just a bad guy. The journalists will dig into his backstory, his origins, and how the public reacts to his existence. The approach will examine what Grodd’s presence says about society and how people handle threats they do not fully understand.

Who Is Making the Show

The creative team behind the series brings strong credentials. Perrault and Yacenda created American Vandal, which earned an Emmy nomination for its clever take on true-crime documentaries. Their experience with blending real-world seriousness with absurd situations fits well with the concept of a journalist investigating a telepathic gorilla.

James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as executive producers, ensuring the series connects to the larger DC Universe. Galen Vaisman is also overseeing the project for DC Studios. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.

Where Jimmy Olsen Fits in the DC Universe

Skyler Gisondo first played Jimmy Olsen in Superman (2025), where his performance stood out to audiences. The character will also appear in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which is set for release on July 9, 2027.

The series will follow Olsen and other reporters at the Daily Planet as they investigate cases involving super-powered threats. The show will reportedly not include Lois Lane or Clark Kent as main characters, instead focusing on the supporting journalists who work behind the scenes.

Release Details and Availability

The Jimmy Olsen series does not have a release date yet. The show is still in the writing stage, so filming has not started. When it does arrive, it will stream on Max (formerly HBO Max) for audiences in the United States. International release details, including for viewers in the UK, Canada, Australia, and India, will likely be announced closer to the premiere date.

The series is one of several projects expanding the DC Universe beyond the main films. With its unusual format and creative team, the show aims to offer something different from traditional superhero television.
