Actress Kim Da-mi shared the difficult process of filming water scenes for the upcoming Netflix movie The Great Flood during the 30th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). She described spending months constantly wet while shooting the sci-fi disaster film, which is set to release on December 19.
The Great Flood is a movie about the last day on Earth when a massive flood covers the world. Kim Da-mi plays Anna, an artificial intelligence researcher, who fights to save a child as water fills their apartment building. The film also stars Park Hae-soo, known for his role in Squid Game.
Kim Da-mi’s Experience with Water Filming
At an outdoor stage event held at the Busan Cinema Center on September 19, Kim Da-mi and director Kim Byung-woo talked about making the movie. Kim Da-mi explained that she was in water for nearly six months during filming. To make the underwater scenes look real, she practiced scuba diving and trained to move naturally in water.
She also mentioned that some scenes were shot without water but made to look like they were underwater. This was a new technique in Korean filmmaking. Kim Da-mi said she had to learn how to control her face and body to seem like she was really underwater.
Director Kim Byung-woo apologized to Kim Da-mi for the hard conditions. He said even on days when she wasn’t scheduled to be in water, she often ended up wet. Kim Da-mi joked that she eventually got used to it and would jump into the pool first thing in the morning.
