South Korean cinema has a new box office champion! The chilling occult thriller “Exhuma,” starring renowned actors Choi Min Shik, Kim Go Eun, and Lee Do Hyun, has become the first film of 2024 to surpass a staggering 4 million viewers in just eight days.

This remarkable feat underscores the film’s widespread appeal, captivating audiences with its unique blend of horror, suspense, and supernatural elements.

A Gripping Story and Stellar Cast Fuel Success

Exhuma, directed and written by the acclaimed Jang Jae Hyun (known for “Svaha: The Sixth Finger” and “The Priests”), follows the story of a wealthy family plagued by a series of unsettling paranormal occurrences. Desperate for answers, they seek the help of two shamans, played by Kim Go Eun and Lee Do Hyun.

The shamans quickly sense a sinister presence attached to the family, leading them to a remote village and a disturbing gravesite. As they delve deeper into the mystery, they unwittingly unleash a torrent of evil that threatens to consume them all.

Critical Acclaim and International Recognition

Exhuma featuring Choi Min Shik, Kim Go Eun, Lee Do Hyun, Yoo Hae Jin, and Jeon Jin Ki premiered on February 22 in South Korean theatres. Since its release, the film has topped the box office for eight days consecutively. On March 1, the Korean Film Council announced that Exhuma surpassed 3 million viewers within two days and has already 4 million viewers. This makes Exhuma the first 2024 South Korean film to achieve this feat. The previous record was held by 12.12: The Day which had reached this milestone in twelve days.

Beyond its box office success, Exhuma has garnered critical praise for its suspenseful storytelling, masterful direction, and captivating performances. The film’s unique blend of genres and its exploration of the occult have resonated with audiences, captivating their imaginations and thrilling them with its twists and turns.

Exhuma’s impact extends beyond the South Korean borders. The film received an invitation to the prestigious 74th Berlin International Film Festival, further solidifying its position as a captivating cinematic experience.

Breaking Records and Setting the Stage for Continued Success

By surpassing 4 million viewers in record time, Exhuma has not only established itself as a box office powerhouse but also set the stage for a potentially historic run in South Korean cinema.

Its success highlights the enduring popularity of the occult genre and the continued appeal of well-crafted, high-octane thrillers. With its captivating story, stellar performances, and critical acclaim, Exhuma is poised to continue its reign as a cinematic phenomenon for weeks to come.

Additional Information:

  • The previous record for reaching 4 million viewers in South Korea was held by the film “12.12: The Day,” which achieved the feat in 12 days.
  • Exhuma also stars renowned actors Yoo Hae Jin and Jeon Jin Ki.
  • The film’s director, Jang Jae Hyun, is currently working on another project titled “The Nuns,” starring Song Hye Kyo and Jeon Yeo Been.
