The first season of The Madison just wrapped up on March 21, but fans already know one thing for sure: the Clyburn family’s troubles are far from over. The Taylor Sheridan drama, which premiered on Paramount+ on March 14, introduced viewers to the wealthy Clyburn family as they faced a sudden, heartbreaking loss that forced them to leave New York City for Montana.
Now, with the emotional six-episode first season complete, Kurt Russell is sharing what audiences can expect when the show returns. The actor, who played the family patriarch Preston Clyburn, revealed that the second season—which has already been filmed—will bring a new level of danger to the Montana landscape.
Season 2 Is Already Filmed and Ready to Go
Unlike most television shows that make fans wait months or years for new episodes, The Madison season 2 is already complete. The production filmed both seasons back-to-back to work around Russell’s busy schedule.
The 74-year-old actor was also filming the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters when The Madison was scheduled to begin production. Rather than recast the role, Taylor Sheridan and Michelle Pfeiffer came up with a solution.
“Michelle Pfeiffer and Taylor were able to get together with the people at Paramount+ and said, ‘Well, let’s do two seasons instead of just one,’” Russell told Entertainment Weekly in January 2026. “And then before we start the second season next year, instead of doing that, we will start with Kurt’s stuff. We really do want him to play the guy.”
Production wrapped on season 2 recently, with cast member Elle Chapman confirming the news on social media. Like the first season, the second will also consist of six episodes.
What Kurt Russell Teases About the Danger Ahead
While season 1 focused heavily on grief and the raw emotions following a tragedy, Russell says the second season shifts into something more intense.
“I think it’s fair to say that in Season 2 — and I believe Michelle will agree with me — what happens is the level of real danger goes up. Things begin to become dangerous in realistic ways.”
Director Christina Alexandra Voros, who directed every episode of the first season, also hinted that the story will move forward. While season 1 dealt with the immediate aftermath of loss, the next chapter will explore what rebuilding looks like when the initial shock wears off.
Pfeiffer offered her own take on the shift in tone. She told The Wrap in March 2026 that season 2 carries “a surprising amount of laughs and comical relief,” while also getting “a little more raw” as the reality of the family’s situation fully sinks in.
The Cast Who Is Coming Back and Who Is Not
The full cast list for season 2 has not been officially confirmed, but most of the main players are expected to return. That includes Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, Beau Garrett as her daughter Abigail, Patrick J. Adams as Russell McIntosh, and Elle Chapman as Paige.
However, one key actor will not be back. Matthew Fox, who played Paul Clyburn, Preston’s younger brother, confirmed that his role was always planned as a one-season arc.
“This is a contained experience for me in the show, and I’m very happy about that,” Fox told TV Insider ahead of the finale. “It’s been an incredible experience.”
The first season’s premiere shocked audiences by killing off Preston and Paul in a plane crash early in the episode. With both brothers gone, the second season will focus entirely on the Clyburn women and how they handle life on the Montana ranch without them.
Why This Role Felt Different for Kurt Russell
For Russell, playing Preston Clyburn was a unique experience. The actor, who has built a career playing larger-than-life characters in films like The Thing, Tombstone, and Escape from New York, said this role felt closer to his real life than anything he had done before.
“It was a matter of reading it and saying, ‘Wow, at what point was [writer Taylor Sheridan] a fly on the wall in our house?’” Russell recalled. “When I read it, I realized how, for the first time, I was going to play somebody similar to myself, as opposed to somebody who was a broad character or something in a very different genre.”
The actor moved to Colorado when he was 26 years old to live a rural life while staying in the entertainment business. His longtime partner Goldie Hawn shares his love for the countryside, and the couple spends as much time as possible at their Colorado property.
Russell also shared a sweet personal connection to his character’s love of fly-fishing. His grandfather, Bing Russell, ran a fishing club in Maine, and Russell grew up around the sport. His stepson Oliver Hudson is also an expert fly-fisherman.
“I was never a great fly-fisher, but I do appreciate the aspect of fly-fishing that is hunting fish rather than hoping to catch something,” Russell said. “I like what it has to say about self-reflection when you’re out there doing it.”
When Will Season 2 Release
A premiere date for The Madison season 2 has not been announced yet. However, with production already complete and the show gaining strong viewership on Paramount+, many expect the network to release the new episodes later this year or in early 2027.
The cast is already hoping for even more seasons beyond the second. Patrick J. Adams told The Hollywood Reporter in March that the cast loves working together and would happily continue telling the Clyburn family’s story.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say we would shoot this gladly forever,” Adams said. “We’ve found something kind of miraculously special here and as long as it’s a story that people want to hear, we’d be happy to tell it.”
For now, viewers can catch up on all six episodes of The Madison season 1, which are streaming now on Paramount+.
