Apple TV+ and Apple Music debuted their festive holiday special, A Very Carpool Karaoke Christmas, on Sunday, December 15, 2024. The special, an hour-long episode, marked the return of the show after a long 18-month hiatus. This Christmas edition featured an all-star lineup, with Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, and Chappell Roan bringing their holiday spirit to the popular car-riding singalong.
The New Host Behind the Wheel
For this special, regular host James Corden, 46, passed the reins over to Zane Lowe, 51, a renowned DJ and music personality, who took control of the famed SUV. The episode kicked off with a phone call from Corden to Lowe, asking him to help out with a ride for three celebrity passengers. Lowe, initially surprised by the request to pick up passengers from Tokyo, Missouri, and Los Angeles, seemed up for the challenge.
“I’ve got three friends, they just need a ride,” Corden tells Lowe, to which Lowe responds with a shocked “whoa,” before diving into the fun-filled ride. The festive mood was set with the SUV decorated with garlands and red ribbons, complementing the white leather seats.
Carpool Karaoke with Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, and Chappell Roan
The episode featured some of the biggest names in music, with Lady Gaga, 38, Chappell Roan, 26, and Dua Lipa, 29, hopping into the passenger seat. The trio joined Lowe for a rendition of classic holiday songs like “Sleigh Ride” by The Ronettes and “Last Christmas” by Wham. They also performed some of their own hits, including Lady Gaga’s “Disease,” Dua Lipa’s “New Rules,” and Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.”
The festive fun continued when Lowe joined Lady Gaga’s band to record a new version of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” which will be released as an audio track. Gaga also treated fans to a live performance of her 2008 holiday single, “Christmas Tree,” leaving Lowe puzzled by some of the song’s suggestive lyrics, including the line, “underneath the mistletoe, everyone knows we will take off our clothes.”
Special Appearances and Surprises
The holiday cheer didn’t end there. AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson made a surprise appearance, joining the fun in the SUV. During this segment, Lady Gaga shared an interesting tidbit about her youth, revealing that she appeared as an extra in AC/DC’s music video for “Stiff Upper Lip” at the age of 17.
The special also featured a heartwarming moment during Chappell Roan’s segment, where she introduced Lowe to a chicken on her family farm named after Lady Gaga. Roan’s parents, Kara and Dwight Amstutz, took the opportunity to ride along, expressing their pride in their daughter’s success. Kara Amstutz shared, “I love it when you can just see the people respond to [her] songs so much.”
The Tokyo Christmas Shopping Surprise
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the episode came from Dua Lipa, who took Lowe Christmas shopping in downtown Tokyo. While navigating the vibrant city, Lipa and Lowe belted out Whitney Houston’s classic, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” This unexpected shopping trip added a unique twist to the episode, keeping fans entertained with a lively mix of music and holiday spirit.
Apple TV+ and Apple Music’s A Very Carpool Karaoke Christmas offered an exciting mix of celebrity appearances, holiday cheer, and plenty of musical moments that will surely be remembered for years to come. From Lady Gaga’s festive classics to Chappell Roan’s farm stories, and Dua Lipa’s Tokyo adventure, this holiday special proved to be a fun and entertaining way to kick off the Christmas season.
