The world of Texas oil is rarely peaceful for Tommy Norris, but the latest episode of Landman presented a crisis he could not talk or negotiate his way out of. In Season 2, Episode 5, titled “The Pirate Dinner,” the pressures on the M-Tex president reached a boiling point as his professional authority crumbled and a dangerous alliance formed against his warnings. Amidst this turmoil, a rare moment of family peace provided a stark contrast to Tommy’s unraveling control at work.
The Unraveling of Control at M-Tex
Tommy’s day begins with the unsettling realization that major company problems are being managed without his knowledge. A series of incidentsโincluding a deadly accident on an M-Tex service road, a stalled offshore drilling project, and mounting lawsuitsโare all escalating while he has been preoccupied with family matters. This information gap highlights a growing disconnect between Tommy and the company’s operations.
The situation worsens when Tommy discovers his son Cooper has inadvertently created a massive financial liability. By revealing he was Tommy’s son during business dealings, Cooper triggered clauses that put M-Tex on the hook for enormous costs. To protect his son from financial ruin and professional embarrassment, Tommy is forced to have M-Tex buy out Cooper’s oil leases. This move saves Cooper’s future but strips him of his potential fortune and adds to Tommy’s burdens.
“You got good instinct,” Tommy tells Cooper, attempting to find a silver lining. “And shock of all shocks, apparently youโre a hell of a salesman. So, Iโm gonna hire you back and Iโm gonna teach you.”
Legal meetings offer no relief. Lawyers present Tommy, Cami, and their legal team with strict deadlines and serious threats. The company is sitting on a massive $400 million insurance payout from a damaged offshore rig, but the money is trapped in a complex web of holding companies and tax strategies set up by the late Monty Miller. The only clear legal path to accessing the funds, according to Monty’s attorney, is for M-Tex to declare bankruptcyโan option Cami fiercely rejects.
A Dangerous Alliance Forms with Gallino
The episode’s central conflict erupts from a power struggle between Tommy and Cami Miller, the owner of M-Tex. While Tommy was dealing with his mother’s funeral, Cami took a meeting with Danny “Gallino” Morrell, the cartel boss introduced at the end of Season 1. Gallino has positioned himself as a savior, offering a no-questions-asked line of credit to solve M-Tex’s cash crisis.
Tommy is furious when he learns of this arrangement. In a private confrontation, he warns Cami about Gallino’s true nature, revealing the cartel leader murdered one of his own men right in front of Tommy.
“You can sit up here and play investor, but you killed a man in front of me,” Tommy tells Gallino in a separate meeting. “I know who you are, and I know what your money is. And I canโt have it anywhere near us.”
Despite Tommy’s dire warning, Cami refuses to back down. She is determined to save the company her husband built and sees Gallino’s offer as the only viable solution. She accuses Tommy of not trusting her judgment. This rejection leaves Tommy visibly shaken. For the first time, he faces a threat within his own company that he cannot control or outmaneuver. Gallino himself seems to savor this victory, calmly telling Tommy, “I am the solution. When you realize it, Iโll be here waiting”.

Family Crossroads: A Proposal and a Welcome
Amidst the corporate chaos, the Norris family grapples with its own significant moments. Tommy’s father, T.L., has moved in permanently after the death of Tommy’s mother. While this creates some initial tension, the family begins to adjust. Angela, Tommy’s wife, decides to host a grand welcome dinner for T.L..
Meanwhile, Cooper takes a major step in his personal life. After reconciling with his girlfriend Ariana, he drives to Corpus Christi to ask her father for permission to marry her. The meeting is tense but ultimately successful. Ariana’s father explains that his daughter makes her own decisions and that the visit was merely a test of Cooper’s seriousness. He gives a blunt warning alongside his acceptance: “Hurt my daughter and Iโll kill you”.
The Pirate Dinner: A Moment of Peace
Exhausted from a day of professional defeats, Tommy returns home expecting another stressful family event. Instead, he finds his house transformed for Angela’s “Pirate Dinner”โa themed seafood feast complete with decorations, pirate hats, and shanty music. Contrary to the family’s usual chaotic gatherings, the dinner is a genuine success. The entire family, including T.L., enjoys the meal and each other’s company.
The joyful scene offers Tommy a much-needed respite. T.L., observing the table full of laughing people, remarks to his son, “So much for the illusion of your miserable life”. This single moment of family harmony stands in sharp contrast to the uncontrollable threats and crumbling alliances that defined Tommy’s day, highlighting what he is ultimately fighting to protect.
