Despite the second season of the Paramount+ drama Landman just premiering, the future of the show is already taking shape. Series star Sam Elliott has confirmed the planned production window for a third season, signaling strong internal confidence in the show’s continuation even amid major behind-the-scenes changes at the network.
The news comes at a pivotal time, as the show’s co-creator and prolific writer, Taylor Sheridan, is set to depart Paramount for a new deal with NBCUniversal. However, according to the cast, this move is not expected to halt the storytelling in the world of Landman.
Sam Elliott’s Season 3 Filming Update
While Paramount+ has not yet made a formal announcement about renewing Landman for a third season, actor Sam Elliott, who plays Tommy Norris’s father, T.L., has revealed that the cast and crew are already looking ahead.
In a recent interview, Elliott shared a specific timeline for the next season’s production, generating excitement about the show’s future. He explained that while audiences are just starting to see the second season, the team is already focused on what comes next.
“I’m excited to see what unfolds in [Landman] season 3. I mean, we’re talking about season 2, but that’s backstory for us at this point. We’re all kind of looking toward to April and May when we start shooting season 3,” Elliott said.
This clear filming schedule is a strong indication that a third season is actively being planned, even before an official greenlight from the streaming service.
Taylor Sheridan’s Departure from Paramount
The future of Landman has been a topic of discussion since news broke that Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator and driving force behind the hit Yellowstone franchise, would be leaving Paramount+.
Sheridan, who co-created Landman, has signed a massive new deal reported to be worth $1 billion with NBCUniversal. His film work for Universal is expected to begin next year, though his television commitments with Paramount extend until the end of 2028.
This move was reportedly prompted by creative disagreements with Paramount’s new leadership following its merger with Skydance Media.
How Sheridan’s Exit Affects Landman’s Future
Billy Bob Thornton, who leads the series as oil crisis manager Tommy Norris, and Sam Elliott have both addressed Sheridan’s departure, assuring fans that the show will continue unaffected.
They clarified that Sheridan’s existing shows will remain at Paramount, as the network owns the rights to those properties. His new deal with Universal is for future, unrelated projects.
“I think the shows that are at Paramount, stay at Paramount, so I don’t think those are affected,” Thornton stated. “His deal is for the future. And who knows what that holds. Taylor is a brilliant guy, and I’m sure wherever he goes, whatever he does is gonna be successful.”
Elliott echoed this sentiment, confirming that the series’ trajectory remains secure. “It’s not gonna impact the future of this series because everything that Taylor had at Paramount is gonna stay at Paramount. It’s not like he’s taking it there,” Elliott said. “The Universal thing, as I understand, it’s a whole new deal, so it’s just great for Taylor’s world.”
Landman’s Expanding Story and Characters
Co-creator Christian Wallace has expressed that the world of Landman has ample room to grow, with many stories left to tell. The series is based on the Boomtown podcast, which explores the complex and often dramatic world of West Texas oil prospecting.
“The thing about this show is there are so many ways that this can go, and the world is so vast and big. It’s full of stories, and so far we’re two seasons in and we’ve barely skimmed the surface of what we can do and what we want to do,” Wallace explained. “So I just think that there’s a lot of runway left, and as long as there’s a story to tell and people are there for it, I hope we get to keep telling it.”
The show continues to attract major talent. The second season sees the return of Demi Moore with a larger role, alongside stars like Andy Garcia and Ali Larter. The first season was a major success for Paramount+, drawing 5.2 million viewers and becoming one of its top series debuts in recent years.
