The first season of Netflix’s Japanese action series Last Samurai Standing concluded with a definitive victor in its deadly tournament, but the larger battle for Japan’s future has only just begun. The six-episode show, which debuted on November 13, 2025, follows 292 samurai forced into a lethal race called the Kodoku. The finale settled a bitter personal rivalry while exposing a hidden political plot that threatens to transform the entire nation.

The Final Duel: Shujiro Ends His Rivalry with Bukotsu

The emotional climax of the season was the long-awaited final fight between the main character Shujiro Saga and his brutal nemesis, Bukotsu Kanjiya. Their rivalry began years earlier during the Boshin War. After winning a battle, Shujiro left Bukotsu for dead on the battlefield. Bukotsu survived, was imprisoned, and became consumed by a desire for revenge.

The epic duel in the Last Samurai Standing

Freed to participate in the Kodoku, Bukotsu entered the tournament with one goal: to kill Shujiro. Their final confrontation occurred in a chaotic fight amid an exploding fireworks stand. After a grueling battle, Shujiro ultimately defeated and killed Bukotsu, ending their long-standing feud. The victory was driven by Shujiro’s need to protect his new companion, Futaba, who had filled a void in his life after his daughter’s death. For Bukotsu, the duel provided the honorable death by Shujiro’s hands that he sought.

The Kodoku Tournament’s Hidden Conspiracy

While the samurai fought in the Kodoku, a larger political conspiracy was unfolding behind the scenes. The true mastermind of the deadly competition was revealed to be Kawaji Toshiyoshi, the head of Japan’s police bureau. Kawaji believes the samurai class is outdated and a threat to Japan’s modernization under the new Meiji government.

His goal was to use the Kodoku to systematically eliminate the remaining samurai. The tournament pitted them against each other while also serving as entertainment for wealthy elite benefactors, known as zaibatsu, who backed Kawaji’s rise to power. The finale confirmed that Kawaji had also orchestrated a similar betrayal during the Boshin War, where samurai loyal to the imperial forces were fired upon by their own allies after winning a battle.

Kawaji’s plans escalated when the Home Minister, Toshimichi Okubo, discovered his betrayal. Before Okubo could expose him, Kawaji sent his enforcer, Hanjiro Nakamura, to assassinate the minister. With Okubo dead, Kawaji is now positioned to assume total control and transform Japan into a police state.

Kyojin’s Betrayal and Gentosai’s Hunt

A major twist in the finale was the betrayal by Kyojin Tsuge, who had presented himself as a strategist and ally to Shujiro’s group. Throughout the season, Kyojin helped Shujiro, Futaba, and his adoptive sister Iroha investigate the Kodoku’s origins. However, his true motives were revealed to be self-serving.

Kyojin deliberately separated from the group and manipulated events to turn the deadly hunter Gentosai against Shujiro and his siblings. He was shown telling Gentosai, “Really? You couldn’t kill them? I even gave you their location.” This confirmed he was working to eliminate multiple players at once to improve his own chances of winning.

Gentosai himself is a mysterious enforcer from the secretive Kyohachi-Ryu school where Shujiro and his siblings trained. The school traditionally held its own Kodoku where only one student could survive. Gentosai hunts any students who fled the competition, and with all the former students participating in the larger Kodoku, he has resumed his pursuit.

Setting the Stage for Future Conflict

The season ends with several unresolved conflicts ensuring the story will continue. Shujiro and Futaba witnessed Kawaji leaving the scene of the Home Minister’s murder and now understand the Kodoku is part of a bigger conspiracy. They are determined to reach Tokyo not just to win the tournament, but to expose Kawaji’s plot.

Shujiro’s adoptive siblings from the Kyohachi-Ryu school, including Iroha, Shikura, and Sansuke, survived Gentosai’s attack and have vowed to kill him to end their years of fear. Kyojin’s manipulations and alliance with Gentosai create another layer of danger for the main characters. The Kodoku competition itself is far from over, with Kawaji promising the game will become even more intense as the surviving samurai move closer to Tokyo.
