LE SSERAFIM, one of K-pop’s rising girl groups, has encountered an unexpected setback with their latest release. Their new mini-album “CRAZY” has sold significantly fewer physical copies than anticipated, marking a dramatic 75% drop from their previous album’s first-day sales.

Released on August 30, 2024, “CRAZY” sold only 195,264 copies on its first day. This is a stark contrast to the 783,358 copies sold on the first day of their previous release, “EASY.” The group’s earlier albums had shown a steady rise in sales, with FEARLESS debuting at 176,861 copies, “ANTIFRAGILE” at 408,833 copies, and “UNFORGIVEN” reaching over 1 million copies sold. The sudden decline with “CRAZY” has left fans and industry observers puzzled and concerned.

Several factors have been suggested to explain this unexpected drop. Some fans point to possible technical issues with the Hanteo chart, which tracks album sales, noting a six-hour freeze that may have impacted the final count. Others believe that shipping delays could have affected the numbers, given the group’s substantial popularity.

Beyond logistical concerns, there are also speculations that recent criticisms of the group’s live performances may have dampened enthusiasm for the new release. LE SSERAFIM’s performances at events like Coachella 2024 faced backlash for poor vocal quality, leading to widespread criticism from both fans and netizens. This negative reception might have influenced the decision-making of potential buyers.

Additionally, LE SSERAFIM has been embroiled in various controversies, including accusations of plagiarism and tensions within their management company, HYBE. Such issues may have further contributed to the lukewarm response to “CRAZY.”

As the group begins their comeback promotions with performances on music shows, the industry will be watching closely to see if LE SSERAFIM can recover from this surprising dip in sales.
