South Korean actor Lee Do Hyun is adding another exciting project to his resume while fulfilling his mandatory military service. He has been selected to narrate the upcoming documentary, “Good Bye Phantom,” which chronicles the remarkable story of a renowned Korean Air Force pilot and bids farewell to a legendary fighter jet.

A Look Back at the “Goblin of the Sky” and the F-4 Phantom

“Good Bye Phantom” dives deep into the life and career of Lee Jae Woo, a pilot revered as the “goblin of the sky.” Lee Jae Woo was one of the first pilots qualified to fly the F-4 Phantom II jet, a powerful aircraft that served as a cornerstone of South Korea’s air defense for over five decades.

The documentary explores Lee Jae Woo’s journey, from his rigorous training in the United States to his historic trans-Pacific flight with five other pilots in 1969, delivering the F-4 Phantoms to their new home at the Daegu Air Base. Following his graduation from the Air Force Academy, Lee Jae Woo dedicated the next 30 years to mastering the F-4 Phantom, accumulating a wealth of experience and expertise. Even today, at the age of around 90, Lee Jae Woo remains actively involved in aviation, sharing his knowledge and passion with students at Dongguk University’s Graduate School of International Information.

A Fitting Farewell to a Legacy

The documentary also pays tribute to the F-4 Phantom itself. On June 7, 2024, South Korea held a retirement ceremony for the Phantom F4-E, marking the end of an era for this iconic aircraft. “Good Bye Phantom” captures the historical significance of these fighter jets, which played a vital role in safeguarding South Korean airspace for over 55 years.

By weaving together the story of Lee Jae Woo and the F-4 Phantom, the documentary aims to create a poignant and powerful narrative that celebrates both the pilot’s dedication and the aircraft’s enduring legacy.
